East Africa Grand Tour Medium Itinerary: 8 to 12 Days Across Three or Four Countries

Eight to twelve days can touch all four countries if you fly between them, though two nights is the minimum for each stop.

This is a fast but enjoyable length. Nights are limited, so priorities matter: one gorilla trek, one Mara stay and one Serengeti or Ngorongoro stay is realistic.

The outline below covers eleven days. Shorter and longer versions are discussed afterwards.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Eight-Day

Eight-Day Version

Drop Rwanda or Tanzania. With eight days, Uganda plus Kenya or Kenya plus Tanzania gives much more time per stop. See the Masai Mara guide.

Twelve-Day

Twelve-Day Version

Add Amboseli or Tarangire and a rest day. Twelve days also allows a boat cruise at Queen Elizabeth or Murchison Falls. See Amboseli guide and Tarangire guide.

Flights

Flights and Transfers

Several scheduled flights are normally involved. Check current schedules with your operator and keep a flexible buffer. See flying safaris.

Season

Season Planning

Migration timing in the Mara and Serengeti matters. See Great Migration guide.

Packing

Packing

Layers for cool forest mornings and hot plains, a waterproof jacket and soft bags. See packing list.

Choosing

Choosing Which Stops to Keep

When days are limited, ask which experiences you could not replace. For many travellers the answers are a gorilla trek, a Mara game drive and a Serengeti or Ngorongoro day. Everything else is optional. Amboseli, Tarangire and Queen Elizabeth are lovely but can be skipped. Be honest about how you feel after long flights and early starts, and trade breadth for comfort if needed. A smaller number of longer stays usually produces better photographs and better memories.

Pacing

Pacing Rules of Thumb

Do not schedule more than one flight in a single day if you can avoid it. Alternate demanding days with lighter ones. Put the gorilla trek early, when you are fresh, and leave the final day free for travel to your departure airport. Ask for lodges with a swimming pool or spa where possible, so that rest days are enjoyable rather than empty. Build in a contingency for flight delays.

Sample

Sample Priorities by Traveller

Wildlife photographers may prefer to spend longer in the Mara or Serengeti and skip Rwanda. Primate lovers may spend longer in Uganda and Rwanda and fly out via Nairobi. Couples seeking a romantic trip may add a lakeshore lodge or a balloon flight. Families should check age limits for gorilla trekking and consider a simpler two-country plan. Tell your operator what matters most and let them shape the route around it.

Costs

Costs and Value Without Numbers

The largest items are permits, internal flights, park fees and lodge nights. Official tariffs apply and change, so ask for a written breakdown of what is included. Sharing a vehicle can lower cost without sacrificing quality. Longer stays in fewer places also reduce flight spending.

Final

Final Check Before Booking

Ask your operator to list every flight, road transfer and overnight stop on one page, with approximate durations described in plain terms such as a short flight or a long road day. Compare that page against your energy and interests before you commit.
