Best Time for an East Africa Grand Tour: Gorillas, Migration and Weather by Month

The best window for the grand tour is usually June to October, when forest trails are drier and the migration is in the Mara and northern Serengeti, with January and February as a second option.

The four countries share a rough pattern of long rains from March to May and short rains from October to November, but local conditions vary. A grand tour must balance forests, which are good all year, against plains and migration, which are not.

The sections below work country by country.

Calving in the south from January to March, crossings in the north from July to October. See best time Tanzania and migration calendar.

Compromise

Compromise Windows

If you want gorillas and the migration, aim for August or September, when forests are relatively dry and the Mara is busy. Book permits and camps early.

Green

Green Season Option

April, May and November are quiet and cheaper on lodges, at the cost of mud and showers.

Gorillas

Gorillas in Different Seasons

Rainforest primates can be seen in any month, but dry months make the long, steep paths easier. Mist and rain are normal in these forests, so waterproofs belong in every month. If gorillas are the main priority, shape the trip around dry spells in Uganda and Rwanda, then pick the plains destination that suits that window, since plains wildlife can be seen all year too.

The

The Migration in Two Countries

The herds spend part of the year in the Serengeti and part in the Masai Mara, so you can follow them across the border. In the early year the focus is calving in the south of the Serengeti, then herds move north and west. From about July to October they are in the Mara and the northern Serengeti, where the river crossings occur. Timing varies with the rains, and sightings cannot be guaranteed, so plan flexibly and allow several nights.

Quiet

Quiet Months and Value

The long rains reduce visitor numbers and often lower lodge rates. If you do not mind showers, April and May give green scenery, baby animals and fewer vehicles at sightings. The trade-off is more mud, occasional road closures and cloudy skies. For many travellers, November is a good compromise, with green landscapes and fewer crowds before the December rush.

Practical

Practical Months Summary

For one choice that serves most priorities, aim for late August or September. Forest trails are reasonably dry, the migration is usually in the Mara or northern Serengeti and daytime temperatures are pleasant. Book early, because this is the busiest period.

Combining

Combining Events and Seasons

Some travellers plan around a specific event, such as the calving season or river crossings. Others prefer a quiet time with fewer vehicles. Decide which matters more, and let the rest follow. Remember that no month guarantees a given sighting, so build in extra nights where the main highlight occurs.
