East Africa Grand Tour Long Itinerary: 13 to 18 Days Across Four Countries

Thirteen to eighteen days is the comfortable way to experience the grand tour, allowing three nights at most stops and rest days between the long transfers.

At this length the route feels like a journey rather than a rush. You can add savanna and lake time in Uganda, a conservancy stay in Kenya and a quiet camp in Tanzania.

The outline below is for sixteen days, with notes on stretching it to eighteen.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Uganda

Uganda at a Slower Pace

Three days in Uganda lets you see Murchison Falls or Queen Elizabeth as well as Bwindi, adding savanna and boat life to the forest. Chimpanzees at Kibale can be added with another two days.

Kenya

Kenya in Depth

Add a conservancy stay for walking and night drives alongside the reserve. See Mara conservancies explained.

Tanzania

Tanzania in Depth

Spend two nights in the Serengeti and one in Ngorongoro. See Ngorongoro Crater guide. Mobile camps can place you near the herds.

Eighteen

Eighteen Days

Add Lake Naivasha or Tarangire, or a rest at Lake Bunyonyi. See Lake Bunyonyi.

Managing

Managing Fatigue

Alternate heavy days with light ones. Ask your operator to avoid back-to-back long transfers. See East Africa safari itineraries.

Rhythm

Rhythm of a Long Trip

A good long itinerary alternates between an active stretch and a quieter one. After Bwindi, spend a night by a lake. After the Mara, consider a night on Lake Naivasha or a conservancy for walking. After the Serengeti, the crater is a half-day highlight rather than a full expedition. This rhythm reduces fatigue and keeps animals fresh for your eyes. Check how many hours you spend in vehicles each day, and ask your operator to share a driving and flying overview for the whole trip.

Add-On

Add-On Ideas

Longer trips make room for a hot air balloon over the Mara or Serengeti, a boat trip on the Nile at Murchison Falls, a golden monkey trek in Rwanda or a cultural visit in Uganda or Kenya. Pick one or two rather than all of them. You may also plan a beach finish at the coast or Zanzibar, which offers a contrast to the bush. Ask about conservation initiatives on the way.

Booking

Booking Sequence

Reserve gorilla permits first, then internal flights, then lodges in the Mara and Serengeti, and finally optional activities such as balloons. Confirm every step in writing before you buy international flights. Re-check each transfer one month and one week before departure so that you are not surprised by schedule changes.

Who

Who Should Choose the Long Version

The long version is for travellers who can be away for two to three weeks and who want to avoid hurry. It suits couples marking an anniversary, groups of friends, retirees and photographers. It is also the best way to see how different East African landscapes connect, from the volcano forests to the great plains.

Keeping

Keeping Memories Organised

On a long trip, photographs and notes pile up fast. Back up images each evening, keep a short daily journal and ask your guide to name species and places. These small habits turn a blur of impressions into a clear record that you can return to years later.
