East Africa Grand Tour Short Itinerary: 5 to 7 Days, A Taste of the Region

A five to seven day grand tour cannot honestly cover all four countries, so the best short itineraries pair two destinations and use flights to save time.

Trying to see everything in a week means a lot of time in airports. A better approach is to choose the pairing that matches your main interest and treat the rest as a future trip.

The options below show three realistic pairings for short stays.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

  • Length: 5 to 7 days
  • Realistic scope: Two countries
  • Transport: Flights for long gaps
  • Pace: Fast
  • Best for: First taste of East Africa
Overview

Option One: Uganda and Rwanda

DayPlan
1Arrive Entebbe, transfer to Bwindi area
2Gorilla trek
3Cross to Rwanda
4Volcanoes trek or golden monkeys
5Kigali, departure

This pairing is the most efficient for gorilla lovers. See Uganda and Rwanda safari vacation.

Option

Option Two: Kenya and Tanzania

DayPlan
1Arrive Nairobi
2 to 3Masai Mara game drives
4Fly or drive toward Arusha
5 to 6Serengeti or Ngorongoro
7Departure from Kilimanjaro or Arusha

This pairing is for plains and Big Five fans. See Masai Mara guide and Serengeti guide.

Option

Option Three: Uganda and Kenya

Fly Entebbe to Nairobi after a Bwindi or Queen Elizabeth stay, then spend three nights in the Mara or Amboseli. This works for travellers wanting gorillas and a Kenya classic. See Uganda and Kenya safari holiday.

Why

Why Not Four Countries

Every extra country adds border or airport time and often a visa. In a week, the experience becomes transit rather than safari. If you want all four, move to the medium itinerary.

Tips

Tips for Short Trips

Use direct flights where possible, limit lodge changes and travel with soft luggage. Pre-book permits and park entry. See first-time safari guide.

Next Steps

Fitting

Fitting Gorillas Into a Short Trip

Gorilla trekking is the most time-sensitive activity, because permits are limited and a trek can last most of a day. Put it early in the trip so that a delay does not collapse the rest of the plan. In Uganda, fly or drive straight to the Bwindi region on arrival, and schedule the trek for the next morning. In Rwanda, a transfer from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park is shorter, which makes it the easier option for a very short trip. Do not plan a long drive on the day after a hard trek.

Fitting

Fitting the Plains Into a Short Trip

If your priority is big cats and elephants, the Masai Mara and Serengeti offer the greatest density of wildlife, but they sit in two countries. A short itinerary should choose one. Spend at least three nights in a single park rather than splitting two nights between two. This gives time for early and late drives, and avoids a tiring transfer day. Add a short extension later if you want the second country.

Practical

Practical Pointers

Book flights that arrive early in the day, travel with hand luggage where possible and keep medication, cameras and documents with you at all times. Confirm in writing who will meet you at each airport and the contact number for the day.

Make

Make the Most of Limited Days

Choose lodges with good guides, ask for a vehicle with window seats for everyone and start every drive at first light. A short trip rewards focus: fewer places, longer game drives and one unhurried evening at each lodge.

Permit

Permit Reminder

A gorilla permit is needed for each country in which you trek. Check availability first.
