East Africa Primates Circuit Short Itinerary: 5 to 7 Days Uganda and Rwanda

In five to seven days the primates circuit is realistically a Uganda and Rwanda trip, built around two gorilla treks and one chimpanzee experience, with Tanzania left for a longer journey.

Short trips succeed when they limit the number of hotel changes. The routes below keep one base per forest, put the demanding trek early in the stay, and leave a buffer before the international flight home.

Each outline is a pattern rather than a fixed programme. Your operator will adapt it to permit availability, which governs the real order of days.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Five-Day

Five-Day Version

For five days, drop Kibale. Fly or drive into Bwindi for a gorilla trek on day two, cross to Rwanda on day three, trek in Volcanoes on day four and leave from Kigali on day five. This gives two gorilla encounters but no chimpanzees. A better compromise is to substitute golden monkeys for a second gorilla permit. Read golden monkey tracking in Rwanda.

Pacing

Pacing and Fitness

The hardest hours are the treks themselves, which can last anywhere from under an hour to most of a day depending on where the group is. Avoid scheduling a road transfer straight after a long trek. Have one genuine rest afternoon between treks. See gorilla trekking fitness for preparation.

Where

Where the Time Goes

Road time is the main cost. The road from Uganda toward Rwanda is long, so ask your operator whether a Kigali start suits you better. Our route and border guide explains both directions and the Kampala to Kigali route.

Optional

Optional Add-Ons

With six or seven days you could swap the Kibale chimpanzee trek for a Nyungwe visit, a longer drive that rewards with canopy walking. See Nyungwe vs Kibale chimpanzee trekking to choose.

Permits

Permits Come First

Because short trips leave no slack, secure gorilla permits before booking flights. The permit date defines the whole sequence. See Uganda permits explained. A permit is needed for each country trekked.

Choosing

Choosing the Right Base in Each Forest

On a short trip the choice of lodge can save or cost you an hour or more each day. In Uganda, staying close to the trailhead sector assigned to your permit avoids a very early start and a rough drive before the briefing. In Rwanda, lodges near Volcanoes National Park keep the morning simple, while a Kigali base means an early departure. Ask your operator which gorilla family or sector you are likely to receive, because that affects both the walking time and the best place to sleep the night before.

Extending

Extending the Trip

If a short itinerary feels cramped, move to the medium itinerary or return to the pillar guide for the full picture.
