How to Get to Mikumi National Park: Road From Dar es Salaam, Flights and Connections

Mikumi is reached by tarmac road from Dar es Salaam in about five hours, making it the most convenient park in the south for short safaris.

The park lies beside the main highway that links Dar es Salaam, Morogoro and Iringa, so you can arrive without a flight. This convenience makes it popular for weekends and short breaks.

Flights or onward connections are also possible for those who want to combine it with other parks.

Overview

The Road From Dar es Salaam

The tarmac highway leaves the city, crosses the coastal plain and passes through Morogoro, with the Uluguru Mountains rising to one side. Beyond the town the road enters the Mkata floodplain and then the park itself. Traffic leaving Dar can be heavy, so early departures save time. Safari vehicles are comfortable on this route, and animals can sometimes be spotted beside the highway as you drive through the park boundary.

A

A Highway Through the Park

The main road crosses the park, which means vehicles travel at slow speed and animals occasionally cross. Drivers must be careful, and you should avoid stopping on the road without a guide. This arrangement is unusual in Tanzanian parks and is one reason Mikumi is easy to reach; it also explains why game drives on side tracks are the better way to watch wildlife.

Flying

Flying In

Charter flights can reach an airstrip near the park from Dar es Salaam and other southern airstrips, which suits visitors with limited time or those linking multiple parks. Baggage limits are strict, so use soft bags; see flying safaris in East Africa.

Combining

Combining Mikumi With Other Destinations

Mikumi is often paired with Udzungwa Mountains for forest walks, Nyerere for river safaris and Ruaha for remote wilderness. See Ruaha and Nyerere, getting to Nyerere and a southern Tanzania safari.

What

What to Expect on the Journey

The drive passes villages, farmland and market towns, and the scenery changes as the road approaches the mountains. Stops in Morogoro are possible for refreshments, and your driver-guide may suggest viewpoints on the way. Once inside the park boundary, a more relaxed pace begins, and you may see giraffes or elephants from the highway. Keeping seat belts fastened and following the guide's advice about stopping ensures a safe arrival.

Short

Short Breaks and Longer Trips

Because Mikumi can be reached in a day, it works for a weekend visit as well as a stage on a longer southern route. Travellers with more time can continue to the Udzungwa Mountains or head on to Ruaha. Others return to Dar es Salaam and take a flight onward to the coast or Zanzibar. Your operator can arrange these combinations; see the East Africa safari itineraries for ideas.
