Things to Do in Arusha National Park: Walking Safaris, Canoeing, Crater Views and Mount Meru
Arusha National Park offers game drives, guided walking safaris, canoeing on the Momella Lakes, viewpoints over Ngurdoto Crater and the chance to climb Mount Meru.
Few Tanzanian parks let you mix so many activities in such a small area. In one day you can drive, walk and paddle, and in a few days you can reach the summit of a volcano.
The variety makes it ideal for travellers who want something more active than a standard game drive, and for families or couples who prefer a gentle introduction to safari life.
This guide is part of our Uganda park trails and activities guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Game Drives and Viewpoints
A drive circles the Ngurdoto Crater rim, stops at viewpoints over the forested floor and continues to the lakes. Giraffes, buffalo and monkeys are regular companions, and a good guide will point out birds and small details. A morning start gives the softest light and the best chance of a clear mountain horizon. For more on how drives work, see game drives explained.
Walking Safaris
Because there are no resident lions, ranger-led walking is permitted in suitable parts of the park. Walks bring you close to the textures of the landscape, from tracks and dung to flowers and insects, and they often reveal giraffes or buffalo at eye level. Wear closed shoes, keep to a steady pace and follow the ranger instructions. Read more in night drives and walking safaris.
Canoeing on the Momella Lakes
Paddling quietly across a lake gives a viewpoint that vehicles cannot match. Flamingos, hippos and waterbirds are watched from a respectful distance, and the backdrop of Mount Meru adds to the calm. Sessions are guided, basic instruction is given and conditions can limit availability, so ask in advance whether canoeing is running during your visit.
Climbing Mount Meru
Mount Meru is a volcano that rises to roughly 4,500 metres, and the standard route begins in the park with a ranger escort, climbing through forest and then moorland to a summit ridge. It is often chosen as an acclimatisation climb before Kilimanjaro. Plan carefully using Mount Meru and Arusha National Park guide and compare with Kilimanjaro climbing guide.
Birding, Photography and Quiet Time
Forest, lakeshore and open glades each hold different birds, so patient birders can build a long list in a single day. Photographers will enjoy the mix of wildlife and mountain backdrops. See safari photography tips and Arusha National Park wildlife guide.
Choosing Your Mix
A common choice is a morning drive with a forest walk, a picnic by the lakes and an afternoon canoe session. Active travellers add the Meru climb, while those short on time might do a half-day before an evening flight. Check best time to visit Arusha National Park to match activities to the season.
