Mikumi National Park Itineraries: 2, 4 and 8 Day Southern Tanzania Plans

Mikumi National Park is the most accessible southern Tanzania park, suited to two-day trips from Dar es Salaam or longer routes that continue to Ruaha, Nyerere and Zanzibar.

Mikumi lies beside the main road between Dar es Salaam and Iringa, with the Uluguru and Udzungwa mountains as a backdrop. Its open Mkata floodplain makes wildlife easy to spot, and the park is often described as a smaller, quieter echo of the Serengeti.

Because it is close to the coast, Mikumi suits short trips and also works as the first stop on a southern circuit. The plans below show how to use it in each case.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

Understanding Mikumi

The park is flat and open, so game drives are straightforward and good for first-time visitors. Giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffalo, elephants and lions are all seen, and hippo pools provide dependable viewing. Compare it with other parts of the country in northern versus southern circuit and read Ruaha and Nyerere for the wider south.

Two-Day

Two-Day Itinerary: Weekend From Dar es Salaam

  • Day 1: Leave Dar es Salaam early, travel via Morogoro and arrive for an afternoon game drive.
  • Day 2: Dawn drive across the floodplain, hippo pool visit, then return to the city.

It is a manageable getaway for residents and visitors. Fly-in options may exist for some lodges, so ask your operator.

Four-Day

Four-Day Itinerary: Mikumi and Udzungwa

  • Day 1: Road to Mikumi and an afternoon drive.
  • Day 2: Full day of game drives.
  • Day 3: Visit the nearby Udzungwa Mountains for a forest walk and waterfall hike, looking for primates.
  • Day 4: Return to Dar es Salaam.

This adds cool forest to the open plains and appeals to walkers and birders.

Eight-Day

Eight-Day Itinerary: Mikumi, Ruaha and Zanzibar

  • Days 1 to 2: Mikumi.
  • Day 3: Drive via Iringa towards Ruaha.
  • Days 4 to 6: Ruaha game drives, with a possible walk.
  • Day 7: Fly to Dar es Salaam and on to Zanzibar.
  • Day 8: Beach time. See Zanzibar beaches by region.

A southern safari ending on the Indian Ocean makes a relaxing contrast. You may also compare it with the 10-day southern Tanzania safari.

Pacing

Pacing Advice

Allow a full day for the longest transfers, and avoid scheduling a flight on the same morning as a long road leg. The highway runs close to the park, so keep early starts for the best wildlife viewing away from traffic. Review the flying safaris guide if you want to shorten distances.

Seasons

Seasons and Practical Notes

Dry months from June to October are the best for wildlife around water, and the rains bring greenery and fewer visitors. See the best time for Tanzania. Fees are set officially, and your operator will confirm what is included.
