Uganda and Zanzibar Long Itinerary: 13 to 18 Days of Safari and Island Life

A two to two-and-a-half week trip lets you see northern and western Uganda at an easy pace, add rest days and then spend a full week or more exploring Zanzibar.

With thirteen days or more, the trip stops feeling like a sprint. You can drive between parks with meaningful stops, add cultural and lake experiences and still have a genuine beach holiday at the end.

The outlines below cover 13, 15 and 18 days. For shorter plans, see the medium itinerary, and for route logistics see the route and border guide. Our combination guide explains the reasoning behind this order.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Fifteen

Fifteen Days: Adding Lake Bunyonyi and Rest

Fifteen days adds a quiet stay at Lake Bunyonyi after gorillas, with canoe paddling and village walks, and an extra beach day. Bunyonyi is a gentle way to recover from forest trekking before the journey back, and the Bwindi to Lake Bunyonyi route page covers the road. You could also take a light aircraft from the south-west back to Entebbe to save a full travelling day.

Eighteen

Eighteen Days: The Complete Journey

Eighteen days allow a week in Zanzibar and a more thorough Uganda leg, including Kidepo or the Rwenzori foothills if you wish, or additional days in Queen Elizabeth for lion tracking and birdwatching. Zanzibar time can be split between Stone Town, the north coast and the east coast, with a spice farm visit, Jozani Forest and a snorkelling trip to Mnemba. See our Mnemba Island guide for water activities.

Rhythm

Rhythm of a Long Trip

On a long itinerary, alternate big days with easy ones. After every trek or full-day drive, schedule a lodge day. Take a break from transfers by flying on at least one Uganda leg. Do laundry when your lodge offers it, because lighter packing helps with aircraft weight limits. This rhythm keeps energy up and prevents the second week from feeling like an endurance test.

Choosing

Choosing a Zanzibar Structure

With five or six nights, consider two bases: one night or two in Stone Town, then four on the coast. Alternatively, stay on the north coast for swimming at all tides, then move to the east coast for a quieter, more local feel. Different shores are explained on the beaches by region page. A cultural day with the Swahili coast culture and history background makes Stone Town more meaningful.

Budgeting

Budgeting Time, Not Just Money

Longer trips are more flexible. If weather in Uganda changes plans, a buffer day absorbs it without losing your onward flight. It also means you can choose the season more freely, as explained in the best time page.
