Uganda and Zanzibar Medium Itinerary: 8 to 12 Days of Primates, Wildlife and Beach

Eight to twelve days is the best length for Uganda and Zanzibar, because it fits gorillas, chimpanzees and a wildlife park with a proper beach stay and no daily rush.

This length lets the route follow Uganda's natural west-bound arc from Entebbe to Kibale, Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi, then return for the coast. Driving days are long but scenic, and each stop has a different character.

Below are three outlines for 8, 10 and 12 days. The shorter plan is on the short itinerary page and the fuller one on the long itinerary page. Start with the combination guide if you are still deciding.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Ten

Ten Days: Adding Chimpanzees

A ten-day plan adds Kibale. After Entebbe you drive west to Kibale for chimpanzee tracking and a walk in the Bigodi wetland, continue to Queen Elizabeth for a boat cruise, cross to Ishasha for tree-climbing lions and finish in Bwindi for gorillas. Return by air or road, then spend three nights on Zanzibar. See the Kibale guide and the Queen Elizabeth guide for details on each stop.

Twelve

Twelve Days: Full Safari and Island

Twelve days allows Murchison Falls in the north, where a launch trip on the Nile and a drive to the top of the falls make a different kind of safari. The sequence then moves south through Kibale, Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi before the beach. It involves several long drives, so consider a flight on at least one leg. The Murchison Falls page covers the north, while the Uganda itinerary ideas page offers other combinations.

Pacing

Pacing and Rest Days

Each trek is physically demanding, so avoid scheduling gorillas and chimpanzees on consecutive days if you can. Use the day after Bwindi as a lighter day. Build a buffer between the last Uganda activity and the international connection, because road conditions can change. In Zanzibar, divide time between Stone Town, one excursion such as a spice farm or Jozani Forest and unhurried beach days.

Zanzibar

Zanzibar Choices at This Length

With three or four nights, consider splitting your stay between Stone Town and the coast, or choosing one beach base and making day trips. Spice farms, Jozani Forest and Mnemba snorkelling can each be done in half a day. Read our Stone Town and spice tours and Jozani Forest guide before deciding.

Transfers

Transfers and Luggage

Plan for soft bags on any light aircraft, since weight limits are strict, and keep a small day bag for gorilla trekking. International flights to Zanzibar usually connect through a regional hub, so check current schedules with your operator and allow a comfortable gap. More detail is in the route and border guide.
