Kenya Safari, Diani and Lamu Long Itinerary: 13 to 18 Days

Thirteen to eighteen days allows a full Kenyan circuit, from lakes and the Masai Mara to Amboseli, Tsavo, Diani and Lamu, with rest days between the big stops.

A long itinerary changes the character of the trip. You are no longer racing from one highlight to the next but moving through Kenya's landscapes at the pace they deserve.

Three outlines for 13, 15 and 18 days follow. For shorter plans, see the medium itinerary page, and for the reasoning, the combination guide.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Fifteen

Fifteen Days: Adding Tsavo and Mombasa

Fifteen days adds a night in Tsavo and a half-day in Mombasa, taking in Fort Jesus and the old town streets. This also gives Diani an extra day. The journey from Amboseli to the coast is smoother with a stop at Tsavo, and Mombasa provides an urban contrast. Our 15-day Kenya bush and Diani coast holiday follows a similar logic, and the Mombasa guide gives context.

Eighteen

Eighteen Days: The Grand Version

Eighteen days lets you include Lake Naivasha or Hell's Gate, a longer stay in the Mara to improve chances of rare sightings and a leisurely week on the coast. You could also add Samburu or Laikipia in the north, though that adds travel time. See the Lake Naivasha and Hell's Gate page and the Laikipia and Ol Pejeta page for ideas.

Rhythm

Rhythm of a Long Trip

Alternate intense and easy days. After each safari stop, add a day with no early start. Use lodge pools, spa time and short walks to recover. Because the trip crosses climate zones, from cool highlands to the humid coast, pack layers and reconsider your kit at each stage. Keep your laundry organised, since light aircraft have strict luggage allowances.

Adding

Adding Rest Days and Optional Stops

A long itinerary should include at least two days with no transfers. A typical choice is a lodge day in the Mara or Amboseli, when you can decide whether to drive or relax, and a spare day in Diani before Lamu. Optional stops include Lake Naivasha for boat trips and walking, and a night in Nairobi for the city's museums, giraffe sanctuary and food. See the things to do in Nairobi for ideas.

Planning

Planning the Lamu Section

Lamu is best at the end, when your pace has already slowed. Two or three nights let you explore the old town, take a dhow trip and relax on the beach. Because it is remote, flights must be booked in advance. Read the route and border guide and practical guide before finalising dates, and check government travel advice for the Lamu area before you go.

Seasonal

Seasonal Choices on a Long Trip

A long itinerary gives flexibility to chase the Mara migration, which runs roughly from July to October, or to enjoy the coast in its hotter months. See the best time page for month-by-month advice, and make your choice based on whether wildlife or beach weather is the priority.
