Ngorongoro Crater Itineraries: One-Day, Three-Day and Seven-Day Sample Safaris

Ngorongoro Crater works as a one-night highlight, the centrepiece of a three-day northern circuit trip or one stop in a week-long safari with the Serengeti and Tarangire.

The crater is a compact, wildlife-rich caldera, and most visitors need only one morning on its floor. What changes from trip to trip is what surrounds it: the road from Arusha, a night on the rim or in Karatu and the onward journey to the Serengeti.

These sample itineraries show how to build around the crater without rushing the other parks.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

Planning Around the Crater

Ngorongoro is one of the most efficient wildlife experiences in Africa because lions, hippos, buffalo, hyenas, wildebeest and black rhinos live in a small area. Time on the crater floor is limited by park rules, usually to a morning or around six hours, so an early descent matters. Read the Ngorongoro Crater guide for the basics and the wildlife guide for what to look for. The crater is part of a wider conservation area, explored in beyond the crater.

One

One Day or Overnight Crater Trip

Day one: drive from Arusha via Lake Manyara and Karatu, check in at a lodge on the rim or in the highlands and enjoy the view across the caldera at sunset. Day two: descend at first light, spend the morning on the floor with a picnic breakfast or lunch, then return to Arusha or continue to the Serengeti. A true same-day trip from Arusha is possible but tiring, and an overnight stay produces earlier access and better light. See how to get to Ngorongoro for road details.

Three

Three Day Northern Circuit Sample

Day one: depart Arusha for Tarangire, with an afternoon drive among elephants and baobabs, and overnight near the park. Day two: drive to the Ngorongoro rim, with time on the way for a short stop at Lake Manyara, and sleep with a view of the crater. Day three: descend into the crater for a morning game drive, then return to Arusha. This is the classic short safari and gives an excellent snapshot of the northern circuit; for more depth see the northern circuit guide.

Seven

Seven Day Sample With the Serengeti

Days one and two: Arusha to Tarangire, then on to Lake Manyara and Karatu for a quiet highland night. Day three: Ngorongoro Crater descent. Days four to six: cross the highlands to the Serengeti, stopping at Olduvai Gorge on the way, and spend three nights moving between regions according to the season. Day seven: fly or drive out. The longer plan lets you enjoy the Serengeti, and it is often matched by tours such as the 7 day northern circuit safari.

Pacing

Pacing Tips

Do not place the crater on the same day as a long transfer if you can avoid it, because tired travellers see less. Keep afternoons light after a crater morning, since the rim can be cold and misty. Build in a contingency morning when you travel in the rainy season. Pack warm clothing, which is easy to forget on a safari, using the packing list as a guide.

Choosing

Choosing Dates

The crater is rewarding year-round, with the driest months generally from June to October. See best time to visit Ngorongoro for month-by-month conditions and Tanzania safari itineraries for alternative routes.
