How to Get to Ngorongoro Crater: Road From Arusha, Flights and Routes

Ngorongoro Crater is about three to four hours by road from Arusha, usually via Lake Manyara, and sits between Tarangire and the Serengeti on the northern circuit.

The drive climbs steadily to the crater rim, with views over the Rift Valley. Most itineraries pair Ngorongoro with Tarangire, Manyara and the Serengeti.

Flights serve nearby airstrips but are less commonly used.

Sample

Sample Itineraries

A typical plan drives from Arusha to Karatu, spends a morning in the crater and continues to the Serengeti. A longer plan includes Lake Manyara and Tarangire first. Departing visitors often drive back to Arusha or fly from the Serengeti. Allow a rest day if you have long flights.

Gates

Gates, Fees and Rules

Entry is regulated by the conservation authority. Descent times are limited, and only certain vehicles are allowed. Your operator handles permits and fees. Bring your passport and be prepared for inspections.

Comfort

Comfort and Health on the Route

The journey climbs from low to high altitude, so dress in layers. Carry water, snacks and motion-sickness remedies if you are sensitive to winding roads. See health guide.

Stopovers

Stopovers Worth Making

Lake Manyara, Mto wa Mbu village and Karatu's coffee farms make interesting breaks. A visit to a market or farm adds cultural context. Allow time for lunch and photos, and avoid arriving at the crater after dark.

What

What to Pack for the Route

Bring warm layers, a rain jacket, sunscreen and snacks. A small daypack helps for stops. Download offline maps and carry copies of documents. See packing list.

Planning

Planning Your Arrival Day

Most visitors arrive from Arusha by road, with a stop at Lake Manyara or Karatu en route, then check in at a rim lodge with sweeping views. Allow time to settle in, enjoy the sunset and sleep well before the early descent the next morning. If you fly to the Serengeti or onward, plan your timing so that you are not rushing between the crater and the airstrip. Your operator will arrange permits, park fees and the vehicle that is permitted to descend, so confirm these details early. Carry warm clothing in your day bag, because the rim is cold in the evening and morning, and keep passports and permits accessible at the gate. A relaxed arrival makes the crater day itself far more enjoyable.
