Ngorongoro Crater Wildlife Guide: Lions, Rhinos, Elephants and Flamingos

The Ngorongoro Crater is a collapsed volcano whose floor holds lions, black rhinos, elephants, hippos, buffalo, hyenas and large herds in a compact area.

Its walls form a natural enclosure, so animals live there year-round. Game drives are short but rich, and the crater is one of the best places to see black rhinos.

This guide covers what to expect on the floor.

This guide is part of our animals of Uganda and East Africa guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Black Rhinos

The crater holds one of the better chances to see black rhinos, though they are usually distant. Binoculars help.

Lions

Lions and Hyenas

Prides hunt across the grassland, and hyena clans den near water.

Elephants

Elephants and Buffalo

Bull elephants and buffalo herds feed in forest and swamps.

Seasonal

Seasonal Variations on the Crater Floor

Herds of wildebeest and zebra live in the crater year-round, though numbers rise in wetter months when grass is lush. Lake Magadi's flamingos vary with water levels. Lion activity is visible in all seasons. Mornings and late afternoons give the best light and animal movement.

Crater

Crater Etiquette and Rules

Vehicles must stay on tracks, and time on the floor is limited, so guides plan routes carefully. Picnic lunches are eaten at designated spots where kites steal food, so keep sandwiches covered. Do not litter, and respect distances from rhinos and other animals.

Beyond

Beyond the Crater

The surrounding highlands hold Maasai communities, forests and walking trails. Olduvai Gorge, a famous archaeological site, lies nearby. See beyond the crater.

How

How to Make the Most of a Crater Visit

Descend early, take a picnic and plan a route that covers the lake, forest and plains. Ask your guide to check for rhino sightings and prioritise lions. Keep binoculars ready and allow time to simply watch behaviour. Avoid rushing, because the crater rewards patience.

Reading

Reading the Crater Habitats

The crater floor is a mosaic of habitats packed into a bowl about twenty kilometres across. Open short-grass plains hold wildebeest, zebra, Thomson's and Grant's gazelles and the predators that follow them. The Lerai forest shelters elephants, bushbuck, monkeys and leopards, and is a pleasant place to stop in shade. Lake Magadi attracts flamingos in varying numbers, along with hippos in the pools, while freshwater springs draw hippos and a wide variety of birds. Understanding which habitat suits which species helps you and your guide plan a route that covers each in turn, rather than driving randomly. Binoculars help with the more distant rhinos, and patient waiting at waterholes often pays off with close, unhurried sightings of lions and hyenas hunting or resting.
