Best Time to Visit Ngorongoro Crater: Seasons, Weather and Crowds

Ngorongoro is a year-round destination, with June to October the driest and November to May greener, though the crater rim can be cool and misty in any month.

Wildlife lives in the crater all year, so timing mostly affects weather, crowds and scenery.

Rim lodges sit at roughly 2,300 metres, so nights are cold.

Expect chilly mornings and evenings, and mist. Pack warm layers.

Crowds

Crowds and Timing

Descend at first light to enjoy fewer vehicles.

Rainy

Rainy Season Notes

Roads can be slippery, but wildlife remains visible and scenery is lush.

Wildlife

Wildlife and Photography by Season

Dry months give clear skies and good light for photography, with animals gathered near water. Green months bring dramatic clouds, wildflowers and newborn animals. Mist over the rim can create atmospheric scenes. Choose the season that matches your photographic or birding goals.

Rim

Rim Lodges and Comfort

Lodges on the rim have spectacular views and cosy fireplaces, but evenings are chilly. Bring warm clothing even in the dry season. Book early for popular lodges and request crater-facing rooms if views matter.

Combining

Combining With the Serengeti

Ngorongoro pairs naturally with the Serengeti on a northern circuit. In migration months, spend longer in the Serengeti, and in the green season, allow time for the crater and highlands. See Serengeti best time.

Health

Health and Altitude

The crater rim is high, and some travellers feel the altitude. Drink water, take it easy on arrival and let your guide know if you feel unwell. Warm clothing, a hat and gloves can be useful on cold mornings.

Choosing

Choosing Between Dry and Green Season

The crater floor holds animals all year because the walls trap permanent water and grazing, so it is rarely a bad time for wildlife. Dry months bring clearer roads, easier driving and more concentrated sightings around the lake and the Ngoitokitok springs, while the green months bring fresher scenery, fewer vehicles and often better value at rim lodges. If photography matters, clear dry mornings give crisp light across the rim, but dramatic cloud and mist in the wetter months can produce atmospheric images that many visitors prefer. Weigh your priorities: reliable sightings and dry roads, or quiet and green landscapes. Either way, descend early, because the best light and the most active predators are found before the crowd arrives and the heat builds. Layers matter in every season at the rim, where mornings are cold even when the crater floor warms quickly.
