Nairobi to Lake Baringo: Road Route, Stops and Pacing for the Northern Rift Valley

Lake Baringo is reached by driving north from Nairobi through the Rift Valley via Nakuru, a long day that is much more enjoyable when broken with a stop at a lake.

Baringo is one of Kenya's freshwater Rift Valley lakes, famed for birds, hippos and boat trips. It sits well north of Nairobi in hot, dry country, so the route is longer than the trip to nearby lakes.

Use this page to plan the journey; for the lake itself see Lake Bogoria and Lake Baringo guide.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

The Road North

From Nairobi the road climbs to the escarpment viewpoint, drops into the Rift Valley and runs past Lake Naivasha towards Nakuru. North of Nakuru it continues across drier country towards Marigat and the lake shore. The journey is mostly sealed road but can be slow behind heavy traffic. Because it is a full day, an early start is essential if you want time for a boat trip or an evening birdwatching session on arrival.

Making

Making the Journey Part of the Safari

Breaking the drive at Lake Naivasha or Lake Nakuru lets you combine a morning of wildlife viewing with the transfer. See the Naivasha route and the Nakuru route. Many itineraries link Nakuru, Baringo and Bogoria in a loop before turning south again.

Flights

Flights and Alternatives

There is no routine scheduled air service to the lake for most visitors, so travel is normally by road with a driver-guide. Private charters are possible for groups, but most travellers choose to drive and enjoy the scenery.

What

What to Expect at the End

Near Baringo the temperature rises, vegetation turns to thorn scrub and the lake appears as a brown, shallow expanse fringed with acacia. Boat trips, bird walks and visits to nearby escarpments are the main activities. Accommodation is generally concentrated along the shore. Check our accommodation types guide for what to ask when booking.

Season

Season and Conditions

Roads are reliable in the dry months and can be slower after heavy rain. Midday heat can be intense, so plan outdoor activities for early morning and late afternoon. See the best time to visit Kenya.

Preparing

Preparing for the Drive

Carry plenty of water, a hat, sunglasses and binoculars. Fill any personal medication needs before leaving the main towns, and keep time for a comfortable lunch stop. See our packing list. Time on the lake itself is the reward for the long drive, so confirm in advance whether your boat trip is arranged for the afternoon of arrival or the following morning. Late afternoon is wonderful for birds and hippos, but the heat can be strong at midday. If you are also visiting Bogoria, ask whether to go the same day or on a separate morning, and plan your bags so the second leg is simple. Finally, remember that distances in this region feel longer than they look on a map, so avoid booking an onward flight or connection on the same day you return to Nairobi. A comfortable buffer keeps the end of the trip stress-free.
