Where to Stay in Moshi and Around Kilimanjaro: Town, Foothills and Trek Bases
Moshi is the main base for Kilimanjaro, with town hotels, guesthouses and lodges on the lower slopes that suit trekkers, families and travellers who simply want mountain views.
Moshi sits at the southern foot of Kilimanjaro and is the working town for the climbing industry. Around it, villages on the lower slopes offer quieter bases with coffee farms, banana groves and waterfalls.
Where you sleep before and after a climb matters more than many travellers expect, so this guide sets out the choices and the questions worth asking.
This guide is part of our where to stay in Uganda guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

How the Area Is Laid Out
Moshi is a compact town with a market, cafes and a clock tower roundabout, and on clear mornings the summit appears above the roofs. Kilimanjaro International Airport lies between Moshi and Arusha, so transfers to either are manageable. Villages such as those towards Marangu, Machame and Mweka sit higher, closer to the trailheads and the national park gates. Choose between town convenience and the cooler, greener slopes depending on how much time you will spend in your room. See how to get to Kilimanjaro.
Accommodation Types
Moshi offers a range from simple guesthouses and backpacker hostels to comfortable hotels with pools and gardens. On the lower slopes you will find small lodges, family-run guesthouses and some homestays that welcome visitors to coffee farms. Climbing operators often have a favoured hotel where gear is checked and briefings are held. Self-catering apartments exist but are less common. Pick a place with reliable hot water and a safe place to store luggage while you are on the mountain.
Which Option Suits Whom
Trekkers usually stay in a hotel in Moshi or a foothill lodge for the night before the climb and again afterwards, when hot showers and a proper bed matter. Families and non-climbers may prefer a lodge on the slopes with a garden and views, using it as a base for waterfall walks and village visits. Budget travellers can find friendly guesthouses within walking distance of the centre. Couples seeking calm often choose the slopes over the town.
Location Trade-offs
Town hotels give easy access to restaurants, shops, banks and the bus stand but carry more traffic noise. Slope lodges are peaceful and cooler yet need transport for any errand. Staying near the gate you will use can reduce the pre-dawn transfer on trek day. Staying in Arusha instead adds a longer drive but offers more choice of safari-style hotels. For the climb itself, read Kilimanjaro climbing guide and routes compared.
What to Ask When Booking
Ask whether airport transfers are included, whether early breakfast is available on trek day, and whether the hotel offers luggage storage, laundry and gear hire. Check if hot water is dependable, whether the property has a quiet room facing the mountain and how far the nearest restaurants are. If you are climbing, confirm whether your operator books the first and last night or leaves it to you, and what happens if your return is delayed.
Seasons and Availability
The clearer, drier months draw the most climbers, so hotels fill earlier then, particularly near the start of the main trekking periods. Wetter months are quieter and cloud may hide the summit from town. Rooms are rarely a problem for travellers who book ahead. See best time to visit Kilimanjaro.
Combining Moshi With Safaris and the Coast
Many itineraries pair a climb with a short safari or a beach stay. Moshi connects easily by road to Arusha and the northern parks, and by road or air to the coast. See Machame route trek and safari, Kilimanjaro activities and accommodation types.
