Where to Stay Near Mount Meru and Arusha National Park

Most visitors to Mount Meru and Arusha National Park stay in Arusha town or in lodges on the green foothills, with a few camps and mountain huts for those who want to sleep close to the park.

Mount Meru rises above Arusha, and the national park on its slopes is only a short drive from the city. That closeness means you can base yourself comfortably away from the park and still be on a drive or a walk by early morning.

Below, you will find how the area is arranged, which type of stay suits which traveller and what to ask before booking.

This guide is part of our where to stay in Uganda guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

How the Area Is Laid Out

Arusha is the gateway city for the northern circuit, and the road east runs along the base of the mountain through coffee and banana farms to the park gate. Suburbs and villages on the slopes, with names familiar to anyone who has flown into Kilimanjaro Airport, offer garden lodges with Meru views. Inside the park, accommodation is limited and simple, because most visitors use it as a day trip. Climbers use huts along the trail, which are covered in Mount Meru and Arusha National Park guide.

Accommodation

Accommodation Types

Arusha has everything from budget guesthouses to comfortable hotels and boutique properties set in gardens. On the foothills you will find lodges and cottages with views, often with pools and good restaurants. Public campsites and a small number of tented options exist in and near the park. For climbers, basic mountain huts provide bunk beds along the route. Large resort-scale properties are fewer here than in the main safari parks, and the emphasis is on garden settings and calm.

Which

Which Option Suits Whom

A garden lodge on the slopes suits couples and families who want a gentle first or last night in Tanzania with a game drive or canoe outing. Business travellers and those arriving late often prefer a hotel in town. Walkers and climbers should consider a place that can arrange a ranger, porters and early transfers to the gate. Budget travellers will find good value in the guesthouses of Arusha. Photographers who want sunrise on the mountain should choose a property with an open view east or north.

Location

Location Trade-offs

Staying in town is convenient for shops, banks and onward transport but is busier and the mountain is not always visible. Staying on the slopes is quieter and greener, and shortens the morning drive to the gate, but you will rely on your host for transport. Inside the park, you gain wildlife at your door but fewer facilities. See Arusha gateway guide for the city itself.

What

What to Ask When Booking

Ask how far the property is from the park gate, whether airport transfers and early departures are included, and whether guides and ranger-led walks can be arranged. Check whether the property has a safe luggage room for travellers heading on to long safaris or a climb. If you plan a Meru ascent, ask how the lodge coordinates with your operator on briefings, equipment and the hut bookings that the climb requires.

Seasons

Seasons and Availability

Dry months give the clearest views of the summit and busier trails, so book earlier. The wetter months are green and quiet, with cloud often covering the peak, but the park remains pleasant for walks and birdlife. See best time to visit Meru.

Combining

Combining Meru With Other Stops

Arusha National Park suits the first or last day of a northern circuit trip. See Meru activities, Meru wildlife guide and northern circuit safari. For general advice, read safari accommodation types.
