Where to Stay at Ngorongoro: Crater Rim, Karatu and Beyond
Travellers at Ngorongoro choose between lodges perched on the crater rim, farm lodges in the highlands around Karatu and a small number of camps in the wider conservation area.
The crater is a vast caldera, and the descent road is a short drive from the rim, so where you stay shapes both your views and your early-morning routine. The rim sits high, so nights are cool and mist is common.
This guide explains the main options and the trade-offs between them.
This guide is part of our where to stay in Uganda guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

How the Area Is Laid Out
The crater rim road circles the caldera, and a handful of properties sit on the edge with windows facing the floor far below. Further down the highlands, the town of Karatu is a farming centre with a cluster of lodges set amid coffee and vegetable farms, about a short drive from the gate. In the wider conservation area, camps and campsites sit in other landscapes. See Ngorongoro Conservation Area beyond the crater.
Accommodation Types
Rim properties are lodges and a few camps built to take advantage of the view, often with large windows, fires and heated rooms. Karatu offers farm lodges, guesthouses and mid-range hotels with gardens, many with pools and home-grown food. Public and special campsites exist for camping safaris. Ask your operator to compare rim and Karatu options for your chosen season.
Which Option Suits Whom
Couples and photographers often favour the rim for dramatic sunrise and sunset views and the chance to be first at the descent road. Families and budget-conscious travellers often prefer Karatu, where there is more space, gardens and variety of meals. Adventurous travellers on camping safaris use the designated campsites, which are simple but atmospheric. If you are visiting the crater for one day only, Karatu is a sensible choice, while two nights on the rim suit those who want a slower pace.
Location Trade-offs
The rim puts you closest to the descent road, which means an earlier start and more time on the floor, and the views are unforgettable on clear mornings. The trade-off is cold, damp weather and a smaller choice of meals. Karatu is warmer, and the road to the gate is short, but you will add transfer time. For comparison, see Ngorongoro Crater guide.
What to Ask When Booking
Ask whether the room faces the crater or the outside, whether heating is provided, and how long the drive to the descent road is. Check whether packed breakfasts are offered for dawn departures, whether laundry is available and what vehicle and guide are provided for the crater day. Confirm the rules on children at the property and on the descent, and what happens if mist hides the view.
Seasons and Availability
Dry months fill the best rim rooms first, and Christmas and the migration season bring high demand. Wetter months are quieter and the crater is lush, though the rim can be wet and cold. Book rim properties well ahead. See best time to visit Ngorongoro.
Combining Ngorongoro With Other Parks
The crater sits between Lake Manyara or Tarangire and the Serengeti, so many itineraries include a single night here. Consider two if you want a relaxed second day. See how to get to Ngorongoro, crater wildlife guide and where to stay in the Serengeti.
