Where to Stay in Arusha: Areas, Hotel Types and Tips for Safari Arrivals
Arusha is the main starting point for northern Tanzania safaris, and where you sleep depends on whether you want convenience, calm gardens or a coffee-farm setting.
Arusha is a busy town at the foot of Mount Meru, with markets, restaurants and the offices of many safari operators. Most travellers spend a night here at the start or end of a trip, and the area offers a wide range of stays from city hotels to leafy lodges outside town.
This guide explains the main areas and how to match them to your plans, flights and energy levels.
This guide is part of our where to stay in Uganda guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

How Arusha Is Laid Out
The town centre holds markets, banks and restaurants, and is busy and noisy. Suburbs such as Njiro and neighbourhoods on the slopes of Mount Meru are greener and quieter. Further out, towards Usa River and the foothills, the landscape turns to coffee farms and gardens with views of the mountain on clear days. The international airport lies between Arusha and Moshi, so allow time for the transfer. The Arusha safari gateway guide describes the town in more detail.
Accommodation Types
| Type | What to expect | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Town hotel | Central, restaurants nearby, easy access to offices and markets | Short stops and business |
| Garden lodge | Quiet grounds, pool, birdsong, mountain views | Families and couples |
| Coffee-farm stay | Rural setting, farm walks, peaceful evenings | Relaxed arrivals |
| Guesthouse | Simple, friendly, good value | Budget travellers |
Who Each Option Suits
Travellers who land late or leave early may choose a hotel nearer the airport road to cut transfer time. Families with children often prefer garden lodges where there is space to play and unwind after a long flight. Couples and photographers enjoy farm settings with Meru views and quiet evenings. Budget travellers will find guesthouses and simple hotels, but should check hot water and noise levels. Those starting Kilimanjaro or Meru treks often choose places near the foothills, with space to sort gear and rest before the climb.
Location Trade-Offs
The centre is convenient but can be loud, with traffic and street activity. Suburbs and rural lodges are calmer but require taxis or transfers for dinner out. Staying very close to the airport saves time on departure days but may be further from town. Think about whether you will explore Arusha at all: if you want to visit a market or a cultural centre, stay nearer the centre; if you simply need rest before or after safari, choose calm and green. See getting around East Africa for transfer tips.
What to Ask Before You Book
Ask about airport transfer arrangements and whether the property can accommodate early or late flights. Ask whether rooms are quiet at night, and whether there is a safe place to store luggage while you are on safari. Confirm laundry service, since many travellers want clean clothes before a flight home, and ask about breakfast times for early safari departures. If you are heading to altitude, ask how the property can help with rest and hydration. Also ask about parking if you are self-driving.
Seasons and Availability
Arusha has a long dry period in roughly June to October and rainy periods in about March to May and November. The busiest months coincide with peak safari travel, so good places can sell out early. Rains turn the surroundings green and dust settles, but roads can become muddy. Check the Tanzania best time to visit guide and bring layers, as evenings can be cool.
Combining Arusha With Other Stops
Arusha is the launch point for the northern circuit safari, including Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti. It also leads to Arusha National Park for a gentle day trip. For onward stays see where to stay in Karatu and where to stay near Lake Manyara. For the first night, a calm garden lodge is often better than a central hotel.
