Where to Stay Near Lake Manyara: Escarpment Lodges, Mto wa Mbu and Farm Stays
Lake Manyara has accommodation on the escarpment above the park, in the village of Mto wa Mbu and on nearby farms, each offering a different balance of views, access and comfort.
Lake Manyara National Park lies beneath the Rift Valley escarpment, with groundwater forest, open floodplain and the alkaline lake itself. Most lodges are outside the park boundary, which gives a choice of settings and styles.
This guide sets out how the area works and how to choose.
This guide is part of our where to stay in Uganda guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

How the Area Is Laid Out
The road from Arusha reaches the village of Mto wa Mbu, close to the park gate, and then climbs the escarpment towards Karatu and Ngorongoro. Accommodation clusters along this stretch: some properties sit in the village and surrounding gardens, others perch on the edge of the escarpment with sweeping views over the lake and plain. A few lie in banana-farm country between the two. See the Lake Manyara National Park guide for the park itself.
Accommodation Types
| Type | What to expect | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Escarpment lodge | Dramatic views, cooler air, pool, short climb to the road | Couples and photographers |
| Village or garden stay | Shaded gardens, easy access to the gate, local life nearby | Families and short stops |
| Farm lodge | Rural setting, banana groves, birdlife | Relaxed travellers |
| Simple guesthouse | Basic rooms, local meals, good value | Budget travellers |
Who Each Option Suits
Couples and photographers often choose escarpment lodges for sunrise and sunset views across the Rift Valley. Families may prefer garden properties near the village, where distances are short and there is space for children. Travellers on a tight schedule may favour a place close to the park gate for an early start. Budget travellers can choose guesthouses in and around Mto wa Mbu, where they can also explore local markets and cultural tours. Birders should ask about gardens and nearby wetland.
Location Trade-Offs
Escarpment lodges have the best views but need a drive down to the park, and the road can be slower during busy periods. Lodges near the gate have shorter transfers but less panoramic scenery. Farm properties are quiet but a little further from services. If your next stop is the crater, an escarpment lodge shortens the following morning, whereas coming from Tarangire a village stay may feel more natural. Compare the Lake Manyara wildlife guide and Lake Manyara activities for what you can do.
What to Ask Before You Book
Ask how long it takes to reach the park gate and whether the property can arrange a half-day or full-day game drive. Ask about the view: is it from the room, the dining area or only from a viewpoint? Ask whether bicycle tours, canoe trips or walks in the village can be arranged. Check what the property does about mosquitoes and heat in the evening. Confirm early breakfast arrangements and luggage storage, and ask about the road surface in wet weather.
Seasons and Availability
The area is lively throughout the year, with a green and birdy rainy season and a clearer dry season. Dry months are busy because Manyara is on the classic northern circuit; book escarpment lodges early for those dates. Rains can make tracks slippery but bring migrant birds and lush forest. See Lake Manyara best time to visit and pack warm layers for escarpment evenings.
Combining Manyara With Other Stops
Manyara is usually combined with Tarangire, Karatu and Ngorongoro; see where to stay in Karatu, where to stay in Arusha and where to stay at Lake Eyasi. For route planning, read how to get to Lake Manyara and Lake Manyara itineraries.
