Where to Stay on Lake Tanganyika: Kigoma, Ujiji, Beach Camps and Chimpanzee Parks
On the Tanzanian shore of Lake Tanganyika, travellers stay in Kigoma town, in quiet lakeside properties or in remote camps used as bases for chimpanzee trekking.
Lake Tanganyika is one of the great lakes of Africa, long, deep and bordered by steep forested hills. In Tanzania it is best known as the gateway to Gombe and Mahale, where chimpanzees live on the shore.
Accommodation falls into a few categories, and the right one depends on how far you want to travel and how much comfort you expect.
This guide is part of our where to stay in Uganda guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

- Best for: Chimpanzee trips and rest
- Access: Flights and boats

How the Area Is Laid Out
Kigoma is the main town and port, with an airport, markets and a set of hotels. Nearby, Ujiji is a historic lakeside settlement with a long trading past. North and south of Kigoma the shoreline becomes remote, with boat-only access to chimpanzee forests. Camps in the far south serve Mahale, reached by flight or long boat journeys. See the Lake Tanganyika guide for background on the lake.
Accommodation Types
| Type | What to expect | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Kigoma town hotel | Practical rooms, restaurants, transport links | Connections and Gombe day trips |
| Lakeshore guesthouse | Quieter setting, water views, personal service | Rest days |
| Remote beach camp | Small, simple or high-end, boat access, forest at the door | Mahale visitors |
| Basic rooms near the shore | Plain rooms with limited services | Budget travellers |
Who Each Option Suits
Travellers on a short Gombe visit often choose a Kigoma hotel and take a boat in the morning. Those wanting rest or time to soak up the lake may prefer a lakeshore guesthouse with views and gardens. Chimpanzee enthusiasts heading to Mahale will usually stay in remote camps, where forest and water are the main attractions. Budget travellers will find basic rooms, but should check food and hot water. Anyone planning boat travel should consider how comfortable they are on open water and plan some flexibility around weather.
Location Trade-Offs
Kigoma has the best services and the easiest connections, but it is not in a forest. Staying near Gombe or Mahale puts you in or beside the habitat, but options are limited and logistics matter. Longer lake journeys can be rewarding but need time. If you are short of days, base in Kigoma and visit Gombe; if you have a week or more, adding a remote camp gives a deeper sense of the lake. Compare the plans in where to stay for Gombe and where to stay at Mahale.
What to Ask Before You Book
Ask how you will travel between stops, whether by flight, boat or road, and what the luggage limits are. Ask about the condition of boats, safety equipment and what happens in rough weather. Ask whether the accommodation provides meals, drinking water and power, and how the camp handles medical emergencies. Ask about mosquito protection and whether laundry is available. Confirm the operating season for remote camps, because some close in wet months.
Seasons and Availability
Lake Tanganyika can be visited much of the year, but the drier months generally offer easier trails and calmer travel. Wetter months bring storms, muddy slopes and sometimes rougher water. Remote camps may have shorter seasons and sell out in dry months. Use the Gombe best time to visit guide and the Mahale best time to visit guide to plan, and consult the health and vaccinations guide before travelling.
Combining the Lake With Other Stops
The lake is often paired with Katavi, giving a mix of bush and shoreline; see where to stay in Katavi. It can also be added to a northern or southern circuit by flight, and to a combined trip described in Gombe and Mahale chimpanzee trekking. For wider choices, see Tanzania safari itineraries.
