How to Get to Saadani National Park: Road From Dar es Salaam, Flights and Boat Links
Saadani is reached by road from Dar es Salaam in roughly half a day, from the Pangani side near Tanga, or by a short flight to the park airstrip from Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar or other Tanzanian hubs.
Saadani sits on the northern coast of mainland Tanzania, between Dar es Salaam and the Tanga region, so it is far closer to the beach and the capital than to the northern circuit parks. That makes it one of the simplest national parks to add to a coastal itinerary.
Your best route depends on whether you arrive from Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar or the north, and on how much time you are willing to spend in a vehicle.
This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.
At a glance
- From Dar es Salaam: Road, roughly half a day
- By air: Short flights to the park airstrip
- From the north: Via Pangani and Tanga road
- Final stretch: Unpaved tracks
- Tip: Allow buffer for traffic in Dar
By Road From Dar es Salaam
The usual road route heads north out of Dar es Salaam, passes Bagamoyo or the Chalinze highway and then turns onto a rougher access road towards the park. Dar traffic can add a great deal of time, so leaving early is wise. The final section is unpaved and can be bumpy or slippery after rain, which is why safari vehicles or four-wheel-drive transfers are normally used. Plan to arrive in time for an afternoon activity, and ask your operator how long the transfer is from your hotel specifically.
By Air
Small aircraft serve a bush airstrip close to the park, with services linking Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar and the wider safari network. Flying turns a long day into a short hop and offers coastal views over mangroves and beaches. Baggage limits are strict, so pack in soft bags and keep weight low. Details are covered in flying safaris in East Africa. Schedules change, so rely on your operator to confirm times and the connection with your international flight.
From the Pangani and Tanga Side
Visitors travelling along the northern coast can approach from the Pangani direction, using the coast road and sometimes a ferry crossing near Pangani. This route suits those who are also exploring the Usambara foothills, Tanga or Pangani beaches. It is slower than it looks on the map, so allow generous time and avoid arriving after dark. Your operator can advise on current road and ferry conditions.
Linking With Zanzibar and Other Parks
Because flights run between the islands and the coast, a short stay in the park can be placed before or after a Zanzibar beach holiday. See the Zanzibar and Stone Town guide for island ideas, and the bush and beach safari for a sample combination. For long routes to the southern or northern parks, compare the two circuits.
Practical Preparation
Carry water, snacks, sun protection and a light layer, and keep passports and permits accessible. Visa information is in the East Africa visa guide, and general transport advice is in getting around East Africa. Ask your operator whether lunch and park entry are included so you are not caught out on arrival day.
