Overview

About the Conservancy

What is Ol Pejeta and who runs it?

Ol Pejeta is a working wildlife conservancy that combines conservation, tourism and community projects, with income reinvested into protecting animals. It sits in Laikipia, close to the equator and with views towards Mount Kenya. See the wider Laikipia and Ol Pejeta guide.

How is it different from a national park?

As a private conservancy it can offer night drives, guided walks, cycling and horse or camel rides in addition to day drives. Vehicle numbers are generally modest, which keeps sightings calmer than at busy hotspots.

Rhinos

Rhinos

Can I see northern white rhinos?

Ol Pejeta is home to the last two northern white rhinos, both females, who live under constant protection. Visits are supervised by rangers and are shaped by their welfare, so ask your operator about current arrangements.

Are black rhinos here too?

Yes, the conservancy has a significant black rhino population and is regarded as a leading rhino sanctuary in East Africa. Background on the wider effort is in black rhino conservation.

Other

Other Wildlife

Which other animals live in Ol Pejeta?

Look for lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, buffalo, Grevy's zebras, Jackson's hartebeest and many antelopes. Birdlife is varied, and wild dogs occur in the wider Laikipia region. The conservancy also operates a chimpanzee sanctuary for rescued apes.

Is the chimpanzee sanctuary a wild experience?

The chimpanzees there are rescued animals living in a protected sanctuary, not wild troops. It is a useful education stop, and for wild chimpanzees you would travel to Uganda.

Activities

Activities

What can I do besides game drives?

Options commonly include night drives, guided bush walks, cycling, horseback or camel rides, rhino and conservation visits and bush meals. Availability varies by lodge and season. Compare with night drives and walking safaris.

How long should I stay?

Two nights is a sensible minimum and three lets you add a walk or night drive without rushing. It works well as a stopover between the Mara and the north.

Getting

Getting There and Timing

How do I get to Ol Pejeta?

It is reached by road from Nairobi via Nanyuki in about four to five hours, or by light aircraft to an airstrip in Laikipia. Many travellers fly one way and drive the other. See Kenya safari itineraries.

When is the best time to go?

The drier months of June to October and January to February make wildlife easier to follow, while the rains bring green scenery and fewer visitors. See best time to visit Kenya.

Planning

Planning Questions

What is the weather like?

Days are warm and nights can be cool because of the altitude. Bring layers, a hat and sunscreen using the packing list.

Is it suitable for families?

Yes. The varied activities and moderate pace appeal to children, though age limits apply on some walks and rides.
