Where to Stay in Diani: Beach Resorts, Boutique Hotels, Villas and Apartments Along the South Coast

Diani accommodation runs along one long white-sand beach and ranges from large resorts to small boutique hotels, private villas, self-catering apartments and simple guesthouses set back from the sea.

Diani is the most popular beach finish for a Kenya safari, and it is an easy place to over-think. The sand is much the same along the stretch, so the real decisions are about atmosphere, distance from the water and how much you want to do outside your hotel.

This guide describes how the coast is arranged, which style of stay suits which traveller and what to check before you pay a deposit. It names no individual hotels and makes no star claims.

This guide is part of our where to stay in Uganda guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

How the Beach Is Arranged

Diani Beach runs in a long strip south of Mombasa, with the main road parallel to the sea behind a belt of palms and coastal forest. Properties are either on the beachfront, a short walk away or set in the shaded lanes inland. Beachfront stays give direct access to the sand and sunsets, while inland stays are quieter, often more spacious and usually easier on the budget. The north of the strip has more shops and restaurants, and the south is generally calmer. For the broader story see the Diani beach guide and the Mombasa and Kenyan coast guide.

Beachfront

Beachfront or Back From the Beach

Beachfront stays offer immediate swimming and sunset views, but they can carry beach-vendor traffic, early sun on the terrace and the highest rates. Back-from-the-beach stays usually share a pool and a short walk to the sea, and many travellers find the trade-off worthwhile for a quieter night and larger room. Check precisely how far the beach is, how you reach it and whether the route is lit and safe at night. Ask about sea-facing rooms and about the property's relationship to the nearest public access path, because it affects how private the sand feels.

Tides

Tides, Reef and Watersports

The Indian Ocean tides matter in Diani. At high tide the water reaches the beach and swimming is easy, while at low tide the sea can recede a long way and the reef flats are exposed. If swimming from your hotel is a priority, ask which stretch is deepest at low tide and whether the property has a pool. Kitesurfing, snorkelling, diving and boat trips are available, and operators can match the activity to the tide timetable. Read diving in East Africa for ideas.

Who

Who Each Style Suits

Families tend to prefer resorts or villas with shallow pools and flexible meal times. Couples and honeymooners often choose boutique hotels or villas with a private plunge pool, and the East Africa honeymoon safaris page has more ideas. Longer-stay and remote workers usually find apartments better value, and groups of friends can split a villa. Guests with limited mobility should ask about steps, paths and sandy access, and see senior and accessible safaris.

Seasons

Seasons, Rains and Availability

The coast is hot and humid for much of the year. The long rains, from about April to June, bring heavy showers and some properties close or reduce service, while the drier months of roughly January to March and July to October are the busiest. The Christmas and New Year period is the most in demand and needs early booking. Sea breezes keep conditions comfortable, but insect repellent and sun protection are essential. Combining

Combining Diani With Safari and Lamu

A classic Kenya trip finishes with three to five nights on the beach after the bush. Fly from the Mara or Amboseli via Nairobi or Mombasa, or travel by road from Tsavo, then transfer to the coast by road or a short flight to the Ukunda airstrip. For ideas see the Kenya safari, Diani and Lamu combination, Amboseli stays and where to stay in Lamu. Ask whether your hotel can arrange airport meet-and-greet and whether late checkout is possible for evening flights.
