Saadani National Park Wildlife Guide: Beach, Bush and River Safaris on the Tanzanian Coast

Saadani National Park is where the African bush meets the Indian Ocean, combining savannah wildlife, a river rich in hippos and birds, and beaches where green turtles nest.

Located on the coast north of Dar es Salaam, Saadani was upgraded to national park status in 2005 by merging a former game reserve with surrounding land, and its wildlife has recovered steadily since.

It is one of the few places in East Africa where you can combine a game drive, a river boat safari and a swim in the sea within a single day, which makes it ideal for a short bush-and-beach break.

This guide is part of our animals of Uganda and East Africa guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Savannah

Savannah Animals

Drives across the open plains reveal giraffes, buffalo, wildebeest, hartebeest, waterbuck and warthogs, often against a skyline that includes the sea. Lions, leopards and hyenas live in the park, but they are not easy to see, and quiet patience is more productive than speed. Elephants occur in smaller numbers than in the big northern parks. For context on the species, see African big cats and East Africa wildlife guide.

River

River Safaris on the Wami

The Wami River winds through the park and out toward the sea, and a boat safari is often the highlight. Hippo pods and crocodiles bask on the banks, while kingfishers, herons, fish eagles and migratory waders add to the birdlist. The calm water allows close, unhurried views, and photographers enjoy low, side-on angles that vehicles cannot give. Read East Africa lakes and rivers for comparison with other water-based safaris.

Turtles

Turtles and the Coast

Green turtles nest on parts of the beach, and local conservation efforts monitor nests and help hatchlings reach the sea. Guides will explain responsible viewing rules, such as keeping lights low and giving the turtles space. The beach is also a good place for walks and birdwatching, with terns and plovers along the tideline. See responsible and conservation travel.

Birds

Birds and Small Animals

Over several hundred bird species have been recorded across the coastal habitats, from savannah birds to estuary waders and forest species in the thickets. Small mammals such as monkeys, mongooses and dik-diks are also regular sights. Bring binoculars and use the East Africa birding guide.

Planning

Planning Your Wildlife Time

Saadani is easy to combine with Zanzibar or the coastal towns, and it forms a relaxed counterpart to northern circuit safaris. Early morning and late afternoon are best for animals, with the heat of the day suited to the beach. See Zanzibar and Stone Town guide and northern circuit safari for ideas.
