Nyerere National Park Wildlife Guide: Hippos, Wild Dogs, Elephants and Rufiji River Life

Nyerere National Park, in southern Tanzania, is a wetland-and-woodland wilderness along the Rufiji River, home to hippos, crocodiles, elephants, buffalo, giraffes, lions, African wild dogs and abundant birds.

The park was created from the northern part of the former Selous Game Reserve, and its river, channels and lakes make it distinct from the dry savannah of the north. Water is central to the experience, with boat safaris adding a perspective that vehicles cannot.

This guide explains what lives in each habitat and how to see it.

This guide is part of our animals of Uganda and East Africa guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Hippos

Hippos and Crocodiles

Large hippo pods share the river with big Nile crocodiles, and boat safaris get eye-level views of both. Crocodiles bask on sandbanks, and fish eagles call from overhanging trees. Boat guides keep a safe distance, because hippos can be dangerous, as explained in why hippos are so aggressive.

Elephants

Elephants, Buffalo and Giraffes

Elephants come to the water to drink and bathe, buffalo graze on floodplains and giraffes browse woodland edges. Sightings along the shore are often relaxed, giving good photographic opportunities. Read the elephant facts guide and African buffalo facts.

Lions

Lions, Leopards and Wild Dogs

Lions are present, though dense vegetation can make them harder to find than in open parks. Leopards use riverine forest, and African wild dogs are one of the park's draws, hunting across the woodland and floodplain, though sightings are never guaranteed. See African wild dogs facts and African big cats.

Birdlife

Birdlife

Waterbirds such as herons, storks, pelicans and kingfishers abound, and bee-eaters nest in riverbanks in season. Raptors including fish eagles are conspicuous. The East Africa birding guide helps plan a trip.

Photography

Photography and Boat Safari Tips

Boat safaris give the best low-angle views of hippos, crocodiles and riverbank birds, so keep your camera ready and your lens hood on to cut glare from the water. Move slowly in the boat to keep it steady, and ask the driver to hold position when you need a longer shot. On drives, early light on the floodplains and river channels is superb. Watch for kingfishers and bee-eaters perched over the water, which reward a fast shutter speed. For equipment and technique, see safari photography tips.

Seeing

Seeing Nyerere Wildlife Well

Combine boat safaris, game drives and, where available, walking safaris for the full picture. Dry season concentrates animals along the water, while the green season is better for birds. Learn more in the Ruaha and Nyerere southern Tanzania safari guide and northern vs southern circuit.
