Where to Stay in Mkomazi: Bases, Camps and Gateway Towns

Mkomazi is a quiet, little-visited park in north-eastern Tanzania, so accommodation is limited to a small number of camps and lodges in and around the park, with simple hotels in the nearby towns for travellers on a budget.

Mkomazi lies in dry bush country between the Pare and Usambara mountains, close to the Kenyan border where it adjoins Tsavo West. Because few travellers come here, the choice of places to sleep is shorter than in the Serengeti or Tarangire, and it pays to plan early.

This guide explains how the area is arranged, what kinds of accommodation you will find, who each suits, and what to ask before you commit to a base.

This guide is part of our where to stay in Uganda guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

How the Area Is Laid Out

Mkomazi is a large park, but visitor facilities cluster near a few access points on its western side, reached by road from the town of Same on the main highway between Moshi and Dar es Salaam. Camps sit either inside the park boundary or just outside it, within reach of the gate. Staying inside saves transfer time and puts you in the bush for dawn and dusk, while staying outside is simpler and often more flexible. Ask your operator exactly where the property is relative to the gate you will use, and how long the first drive to the main wildlife areas will take.

Accommodation

Accommodation Types

Expect a handful of tented camps and small lodges, usually built in a modest, low-impact style, with some basic campsites for self-sufficient groups. Tented camps have proper beds and bathrooms under canvas and suit travellers who want a bush feel. Lodges offer solid rooms and sometimes a pool, which is welcome after a hot day. In Same and along the highway you will find simple guesthouses and town hotels, useful as a night before or after the park. Large resort-style properties are not part of the picture here.

Which

Which Option Suits Whom

Couples and keen wildlife watchers often prefer a tented camp inside or beside the park for the sense of quiet. Families can choose a lodge with more space and a pool, provided children are old enough for early starts and long, warm days. Budget travellers and overlanders may use campsites or town guesthouses and drive in for the day. Photographers should favour a base close to the gate so they can enter at first light. If you want a polished, service-heavy stay, you may find Mkomazi simpler than you expect.

Location

Location Trade-offs

Inside the park you gain atmosphere and early access but have fewer choices and less flexibility if plans change. Outside the park you gain easy logistics, mobile signal and a wider selection of meals, but you lose some wildlife time to transfers. Towns such as Same are practical but not scenic. If you are combining Mkomazi with the mountains, a base near the Pare or Usambara foothills can make an interesting contrast. See how to get to Mkomazi for the road journey.

What

What to Ask When Booking

Ask whether the property is inside the park or outside it, whether park entry and game drives are arranged for you, and what vehicles and guides are provided. Check what is included in meals and drinks, how water and power are supplied, and whether the camp is open in the wetter months. It is also sensible to ask about walking options, night activities and whether the property supports the park's rhino and wild dog conservation work. Confirm access in the rains, because some tracks become slow.

Seasons

Seasons and Availability

The drier months bring easier tracks and concentrated wildlife near water, and camps are most likely to be open and fully staffed then. Green months are quieter and good for birds, though a few small camps may reduce operations or close. Mkomazi is never crowded, but small properties can still fill, particularly when a group has booked a camp exclusively. See best time to visit Mkomazi.

Combining

Combining Mkomazi With Other Stops

Mkomazi fits naturally between Moshi, the Pare and Usambara mountains, Arusha and the coast. Many travellers pair it with Kilimanjaro or the northern circuit, using it as a quieter first or last stop.
