Arusha to Serengeti: Flying or Driving Across Northern Tanzania

The journey from Arusha to the Serengeti can be a short scheduled flight or a long overland drive through Ngorongoro, and the best choice depends on time, budget and what you want to see on the way.

Travellers often underestimate how big northern Tanzania is. The overland route is one of the great safari roads, but it takes a full day, while the flight is quick and gives views over the Rift Valley.

This guide compares the two and shows how to combine them.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

At a glance

  • By air: Short scheduled flight

  • Tip: Match your arrival to the migration
Overview

Choosing Between Air and Road

Flying saves time and is smooth, but it limits what you see on the way. Driving gives a full picture of the landscape and lets you pair the crater with the plains. Many itineraries use both, driving in through Ngorongoro and flying out, or the reverse. If you are short on days, fly; if you have time and enjoy scenery, drive. For a destination guide, see how to get to the Serengeti.

The

The Overland Route

The road takes you west via Mto wa Mbu and Karatu, over the crater rim, past Olduvai Gorge and onto the plains. Each stage changes the landscape from farmland to highland forest to open grass. There are stops for views and lunch, and game viewing on the way is common. See Arusha to Ngorongoro for the first half and Olduvai Gorge for the museum stop.

The

The Flight Option

Scheduled and charter flights serve airstrips near different parts of the park. Luggage limits are strict, so use soft bags and ask your operator for the exact weight allowance. Flight schedules and airstrips change, so confirm details close to departure. See flying safaris in East Africa.

Matching

Matching the Route to the Season

Where you want to be in the Serengeti changes with the migration. Choose your airstrip or entry gate to suit the herds, not just the schedule. See the migration calendar by month and Serengeti regions.

Pacing

Pacing the Journey

Do not plan a long drive on the same day you fly in from abroad. Spend a night in Arusha or on the way, and allow time inside the park once you arrive. Three nights is a good minimum for the Serengeti. See Serengeti itineraries.

What

What to Prepare

Carry layers for cool mornings, sun protection, binoculars and any medication you need. Confirm park permits and flight tickets with your operator. See the packing list.

Where

Where Your Route Leaves You in the Park

The way you arrive shapes your first hours. An overland arrival from Ngorongoro usually reaches the southern or central plains, where you can start a game drive on the way to your camp. A flight lands at an airstrip, where your guide meets you and begins the drive immediately. In either case, ask how long the transfer to your camp will take and whether any game viewing is planned en route. If you are moving between regions within the park, build in a full day, because distances are large and tracks are slow. Tell your operator if you want to prioritise specific animals or migration locations.

Season

Season and Road Notes

Dry months bring dusty but fast roads, and rain can slow parts of the route. Always check conditions before departure.
