Arusha to Ngorongoro: Up the Escarpment to the Crater Rim
The journey from Arusha to Ngorongoro follows the northern circuit road through Mto wa Mbu and Karatu before climbing to the crater rim, and it is usually best treated as a day with a night near the highlands.
This route is a highlight in itself, with volcanic peaks, Rift Valley views and green highland farms. It also sets up the early start that gives the crater its best light and quietest hours.
Here is how to plan the transfer, with stops, pacing and practical advice.
This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

The Route in Stages
The first stage runs west across farmland to the Rift escarpment, followed by the town of Mto wa Mbu. From there the road climbs through forest and farmland to Karatu, and then continues up to the conservation area gate and the rim. Each stage changes the climate, so the air gets cooler and damper as you rise. For a destination-focused version, see how to get to Ngorongoro.
Stops Worth Making
Many travellers combine the drive with an afternoon in Lake Manyara National Park, using the route described in Arusha to Lake Manyara. Other good breaks include the market at Mto wa Mbu, a coffee stop in Karatu and viewpoints on the escarpment. These stops turn a transfer into a gentle introduction to the Rift Valley.
Karatu and the Highlands
Karatu is a green, cool farming area where many travellers sleep, with easy access to the crater gate. It is also the junction for the road to Lake Eyasi; see Arusha to Lake Eyasi. If you want a calmer start to the crater day, sleeping here makes sense.
Planning the Crater Day
The crater descent works best at first light, when animals are active and vehicle numbers are lower. Rim temperatures can be cold, so wear layers. Game drives last several hours, with a picnic lunch on the floor. Read the Ngorongoro Crater guide and the crater wildlife guide to prepare.
Onward to the Serengeti
From the rim the road continues west through the conservation area towards Olduvai Gorge and the Serengeti. See Arusha to Serengeti and Olduvai Gorge. The area beyond the crater is worth a look too; see Ngorongoro Conservation Area beyond the crater.
Season and Conditions
The road is generally usable all year, though rain can slow the highland sections and make the crater road slippery. Mist is common on the rim. See best time to visit Ngorongoro.
Altitude, Weather and Clothing
The crater rim stands high above the Rift Valley floor, so the air is noticeably cooler and often misty. You can leave Arusha in warm sunshine and find yourself reaching for a fleece and a windproof jacket by the time you arrive. Night temperatures can be cold, and rain showers are possible in any month. Pack layers, a hat and gloves for early mornings, and keep a waterproof layer in the vehicle. Most travellers have no trouble with the altitude, but if you feel unwell, tell your guide and rest. The crater floor is warmer, so you will peel layers as the day goes on.
Practical Tips
Carry warm layers, water, snacks and sun protection. Keep binoculars handy for the descent. Check conservation area requirements with your operator ahead of time.
