Kenya 12-Day Safari Itinerary: The North, the Rift Valley, the Mara and Amboseli

Twelve days allows an unhurried loop through northern Kenya, the Rift Valley, the Masai Mara and Amboseli, with rest days built in and time for walks, boat trips and a balloon flight.

This is Kenya's big-picture itinerary: dry-country wildlife in the north, highland and lake scenery in the middle, the great grasslands of the Mara and the elephants of Amboseli to finish. Spread over twelve days, it avoids the rushed feel of shorter trips.

It lies between the 10-day plan and the 14-day plan, and can be adapted either way.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Northern

Northern Kenya and Laikipia

The first part of the route is the quietest. Samburu offers dry-country species along a river, and Laikipia's conservancies provide walking, night drives and a slower pace. These days let you adjust to the time zone and travel at a calm tempo before the busier Mara. See where to stay in Samburu, the Samburu wildlife guide and conservancies vs national reserves.

The

The Rift Valley Lakes

Lake Naivasha is a chance to unwind between wildlife stays. A boat trip among hippos and birds, a walk or bike ride at Hell's Gate and a lakeshore meal make a gentle day. Keep the schedule loose here, as it is a rest day in disguise. See Naivasha and Hell's Gate activities, the Naivasha guide and mountain biking in Kenya.

The

The Masai Mara

Three nights are ideal; two full days give time to follow cats and perhaps to see a river crossing in season. Use a mix of dawn and late drives with midday rest. If you want a quieter experience, choose a conservancy camp for walks and night drives. See where to stay in the Mara and the migration calendar.

Amboseli

Amboseli and the Finish

Amboseli is a satisfying end: wide-open plains, elephants in the swamps and a skyline dominated by Kilimanjaro on a clear dawn. The transfer from the Mara is best done by air with a connection through Nairobi, as the overland route is long. Read how to get to Amboseli and luggage rules for light aircraft.

Pacing

Pacing and Rest Days

  • Consider replacing one travel day with a full rest day, especially after Laikipia.
  • Fly between regions where possible; the plan includes at least three long road transfers if you drive.
  • Keep afternoons free for pool time or a photography session.
  • Check the Kenya booking timeline because popular camps fill early.
  • Add a coast extension if you want a beach; see the coast guide.
Best

Best Season and Who It Suits

The itinerary works best in dry months, June to October and January to March, when roads are firm and wildlife is easier to find. The long rains reduce access in some northern areas, so check with your operator. It suits couples, families with older children and returning visitors who want depth; for children see safari with children. For wider planning see best time to visit Kenya.
