Mountain Biking in Kenya: Hell's Gate, Naivasha and Laikipia on Two Wheels
Kenya offers some of Africa's most distinctive cycling, with Hell's Gate and the Naivasha area, parts of Laikipia and the Rift Valley highlands all allowing riders to pedal through landscapes shared with zebra, giraffe and buffalo.
Most safaris are done from a vehicle, but a few places in Kenya allow cycling in or near wildlife areas, and this makes for a refreshing change of pace. Gorges, escarpments, lakeshores and open plains provide variety, and local guides keep riders safe and informed.
This guide covers the main areas, who they suit and what to ask an operator. For related reading see cycling in Hell's Gate and cycling and bike safaris in East Africa.

Hell's Gate and Naivasha
Hell's Gate National Park is the best-known cycling destination in Kenya, because it permits bikes within the park under rules set by the authorities. Riders pedal along tracks beneath towering cliffs, past plains where zebra and gazelle graze, and down to the gorge for a walk. The ride is mostly flat to rolling and suits a wide range of abilities.
Around Lake Naivasha, guided routes lead through farmland, lakeshore tracks and quiet roads. See Lake Naivasha and Hell's Gate National Park and the park activities guide for context, and the Naivasha town guide for services.
Laikipia and Conservancy Riding
Parts of Laikipia's private conservancies and ranches offer guided bike rides where wildlife risk is managed by experienced guides. Rules vary: some places allow cycling only on set routes or in specific zones, and the animals you may see change with the area. Always ride with the lodge's guide and follow instructions about distance from wildlife.
This is a more exclusive, adventurous form of cycling and often forms part of a wider stay. See Ol Pejeta and Laikipia activities and where to stay in Laikipia.
Highlands and Rift Valley Riding
Kenya's highlands have long been a training ground for athletes, and the hills, escarpments and rural lanes offer rewarding riding for experienced cyclists. Routes around the Rift Valley and the slopes of Mount Kenya use tracks that pass through farms and villages. Conditions are varied, with dust in dry months and mud after rain.
Because road traffic can be heavy and unpredictable, riders should choose routes with an experienced local guide and a support vehicle. See the Kenya travel guide for background.
Who It Suits
Casual riders are comfortable on Hell's Gate's gentler tracks, while keen mountain bikers can seek out steeper and more technical rides in the highlands. Families with older children can enjoy short, guided rides if the operator confirms bike sizes and safety kit. Anyone who is nervous around wildlife should discuss the route and what the guide will do if animals approach.
Good basic fitness, comfort in the sun and a sense of adventure matter more than racing skill.
Safety and Rules
- Always ride with a qualified local guide where required, and follow their instructions on distance from wildlife.
- Wear a helmet, gloves and sun protection, and carry plenty of water.
- Never approach, chase or surprise animals, and stop if the guide asks.
- Check that bikes are well maintained and fitted to your height.
- Carry a basic repair kit and make sure the operator has a support plan.
- Be aware that rules about cycling in parks can change, so check with your operator.
Seasons and Conditions
The drier months, roughly January to March and June to October, are generally best for riding because tracks are firm and visibility is good. The long rains, around March to May, can make tracks slippery and hills muddy, while short rains around November bring variable weather. Mornings are cooler, so start early to avoid midday heat. See best time to visit Kenya.
Adding Cycling to a Safari
A morning bike ride at Hell's Gate fits neatly between Nairobi and the Masai Mara, and a Laikipia ride suits a stay linked to a Mount Kenya and Laikipia itinerary. Mix a ride with game drives and a boat trip for a balanced day. See the walking and conservancy itinerary for other on-foot ideas.
