Cycling in Hell's Gate National Park: Gorges, Zebras and Fischer's Tower
Hell's Gate is one of the few Kenyan parks where you can cycle among zebras, giraffes and buffalo beneath towering red cliffs.
Located near Lake Naivasha, the park takes its name from a narrow break in the cliffs and offers dramatic Rift Valley scenery. Because large predators are not a feature of the park in the way they are elsewhere, walking and cycling are allowed, which is unusual in Kenya.
This guide explains what a ride involves, what you will see, and how to plan safely, with links to the wider area guides.
This guide is part of our Uganda park trails and activities guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Why You Can Cycle Here
Most Kenyan parks require you to stay in a vehicle because of lions and other dangerous animals. Hell's Gate is different, so visitors can hire bicycles and ride through the park on marked tracks. You still need to behave carefully near buffalo and other large animals, but the experience of moving quietly through open country is hard to match. For an overview of the park, read Lake Naivasha and Hell's Gate National Park.
The Ride and the Scenery
The main track runs through open grassland beneath tall red cliffs, with rock towers such as Fischer's Tower and Central Tower rising from the valley. Many cyclists continue towards the gorge area, where a guided walk through narrow rock walls is a highlight. Distances can be shortened or lengthened depending on how far you want to go, and the terrain is mostly gentle with some hills. Time your ride so that you reach the viewpoints in good light, and allow time for photographs.
Wildlife on the Way
Zebras, giraffes, buffalo, warthogs, baboons and several kinds of antelope are common, and the cliffs are good for raptors. You can often stop to watch animals from a respectful distance. Do not approach buffalo or ride close to herds, and follow any ranger advice. Read the wildlife guide for species and tips, and consider taking binoculars. Spotting animals from a bike feels more immersive than viewing from a vehicle, but you should stay alert.
Bikes, Guides and Gear
Bikes can usually be hired near the park gate, and guides are available for the gorge and for general company. Check the bike before you start, including brakes, tyres and seat height, and ask for a helmet if one is available. Wear sun protection, sturdy shoes, a hat and layers, and carry plenty of drinking water because there is little shade. A small daypack, snacks and a light rain jacket are sensible. Our packing list offers further ideas.
Fitness and Safety
The ride suits reasonably active travellers and older children who can cycle confidently, and those who prefer an easier outing can walk or drive part of the way. Heat and sun are the main challenges, along with occasional hills. Go in the cooler hours and take breaks. Stay on tracks, keep a safe distance from animals and tell someone your plans. Park rules and conditions can change, so check with your lodge or operator. Read safari etiquette and safety rules for more.
Best Time to Go
The park is open year-round, but dry months give firmer tracks and clearer views, and rainy periods can bring mud and slippery rock in the gorge. Mornings are usually the best time to cycle because the day heats up quickly. See the best time to visit Naivasha and Hell's Gate for seasonal notes and the how to get there guide for transfers.
Combining It With Other Activities
Many travellers cycle in the morning and enjoy a boat safari on Lake Naivasha in the afternoon, then continue to the Masai Mara or Lake Nakuru the next day. Overnight options are covered in where to stay around Lake Naivasha, and a typical plan appears in our Naivasha itineraries. For other active options, see cycling and bike safaris in East Africa.
