Tanzania in June: The Start of the Dry Season, Grumeti Crossings and Cool Nights

June is the moment Tanzania dries out: the rains retreat, the air turns cool and clear, the wildebeest rut peaks and the great herds funnel towards the western corridor and Grumeti River.

After May, June feels like exhaling. Roads firm up, skies clear and wildlife begins to concentrate as the land dries, while crowds are still lighter than in July and August.

It is one of the best months for a first-time visitor who wants good weather without the full weight of peak season, and it opens up regions that were difficult a few weeks earlier.

This guide is part of our Uganda month-by-month and seasonal guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

How June Differs From May and July

The transition between seasons runs through June. Early in the month there may still be an odd shower, grass is long and the countryside remains green. By mid-June skies are usually blue, nights are cool and roads are dry. By the end of the month you can feel the full dry season, with golden grass, more dust and rising demand for camps. Compared with May, June is easier to plan; compared with July, it is calmer and cheaper to book. See Tanzania in May and Tanzania in September for the contrast.

The

The Rut and the Western Corridor

Wildebeest mating, known as the rut, peaks around late May and June, and the herds move through the central Serengeti towards the western corridor. Males hold small territories, bellow and chase females, creating a noisy, restless scene. In the west the herds meet the Grumeti River, where crocodiles wait at crossing points, although crossings here are less reliably dramatic than the later Mara River crossings. Timing varies with rainfall, so choose a camp or base flexible enough to move. See Serengeti regions.

Tarangire

Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Manyara

As the dry season begins, Tarangire starts to draw elephants, zebras, wildebeest and buffalo towards the river, and sightings improve week by week. Ngorongoro Crater is bright and clear, though rim mornings are cold. Lake Manyara shows its green groundwater forest and flamingo shallows. These parks combine well with the Serengeti, and a classic loop is described in the northern circuit guide.

Chimpanzees

Chimpanzees, South and West

The long dry season opens the remote parks. Gombe and Mahale are easier to reach and walk in as the forest dries, and Ruaha and Nyerere start to recover from the rains, with wildlife gathering on rivers. Katavi follows later. Read Gombe and Mahale trekking and the western circuit itinerary if primates appeal.

Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar

June is a strong month for Kilimanjaro, with drier trails and clearer views, although the summit remains cold and windy. Zanzibar enjoys a slightly cooler, less humid season with sea breezes and good beach days. A short trek or a safari followed by a few beach nights is a popular combination. See Kilimanjaro best time and Zanzibar and Stone Town.

Packing

Packing and Planning Tips

Mornings on open vehicles can be surprisingly cold, so bring a fleece, a windproof jacket, a scarf and gloves for dawn drives, with light layers for midday. A hat, sunglasses and a dust-proof bag for cameras help later in the month. Keep malaria precautions in place; see malaria prevention and the packing list.
