Tanzania in November: Short Rains, Emerald Landscapes and Migrant Birds
November brings the short rains, so Tanzania turns green again, migrant birds arrive, the herds begin heading south for the calving plains and the safari circuit becomes much quieter.
The short rains, known in Swahili as the vuli, usually arrive in the second half of the year's final months and are lighter and more predictable than the long rains of March to May. They tend to come as afternoon showers rather than sustained downpours.
That makes November a surprisingly good month for travellers who like green landscapes, birds and quiet lodges, and who are happy to trade some dry-season certainty for atmosphere.

The Pattern of the Short Rains
November rain is typically less relentless than in April or May. A clear morning is often followed by building cloud, a loud storm in the afternoon and a bright, washed evening. Some years the rains start early and some arrive late, so it is wise to expect variety rather than a fixed pattern. Dust is washed away, rivers begin to refill and the countryside shifts from brown to emerald within days. Temperatures are warm and often humid. Compare with the hotter weather in Tanzania in October and the wetter weather of Tanzania in May.
Where to Go in November
| Area | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Eastern and southern Serengeti | Herds arrive from the north as fresh grass appears |
| Ndutu area | Anticipation before calving, depending on rain |
| Ngorongoro Crater | Green, productive, uncrowded |
| Tarangire | Animals disperse as water appears, lush scenery |
| Lake Manyara | Birds and forest at their best |
| Ruaha and Nyerere | Wetter, some camps close, roads may soften |
| Zanzibar | Warm with showers, quieter |
The Herds Return South
From about November the wildebeest and zebra move back from the north through the eastern Serengeti towards the southern plains, following the first rains and the growth of short grass. They spread across a wide area rather than gathering at a single crossing, so the experience is one of large scattered herds and heightened predator activity. By December many are around the southern plains in preparation for calving. Because timing depends on the rains, use the migration calendar as a guide rather than a promise.
Birds and Baby Animals
Many bird species change dramatically in November. Migrant birds from Europe and Asia arrive during the wet months, and resident birds begin displaying and breeding as insects and seeds become plentiful. Wetlands, lakes and fresh grass are full of activity. Several antelope species have young around this time, and predators take advantage. See the birding guide and Lake Manyara best time for places to look.
Roads, Camps and Flexibility
Showers can make some tracks slippery, especially in the south and west, and a few camps close or reduce services once the rains arrive. The northern circuit generally copes well. Flights usually operate normally, although low cloud occasionally delays them, so give yourself spare days at the end of a trip. A flexible attitude to the weather makes this a pleasant month. See the northern versus southern circuit guide if you are choosing a route.
Mountain, Coast and Islands
Kilimanjaro gets wetter and cloudier in November, so most trekkers prefer other months. The coast is warm with occasional showers, and the ocean is excellent for swimming; some travellers combine a safari with a few relaxed beach days. Mafia Island is known for whale shark season in the warmer months, so ask your operator about timing; see Mafia Island Marine Park and Zanzibar beaches.
Packing for November
Pack a light waterproof jacket, quick-dry clothing, sturdy shoes, sunscreen and a hat, plus warm layers for highland evenings. Binoculars are especially useful for birds, and a rain cover protects cameras. Take malaria precautions seriously during the wet season; see the packing list and health guide.
