Best Time for the Lake Victoria Circuit: Month by Month Across Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania

The Lake Victoria circuit works in most months, but the drier periods of January and February and June to October make travel easier, with migration herds in the Mara and Serengeti from about July to October.

A circuit crosses three climates at once. Uganda has two rainy seasons, Kenya and northern Tanzania have long and short rains, and the lake basin often has its own showers and afternoon storms. No single month is perfect everywhere, so the best window is a balance.

This page gives general month-by-month guidance for the route introduced in the Lake Victoria circuit guide. Patterns vary each year and herd movements are never guaranteed.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

The

The Lake Basin

The area around Lake Victoria is humid and can see rain in many months, often as short, heavy storms in the afternoon. Mornings are usually the best time for boat trips and forest walks. Plan outdoor activities early and keep afternoons flexible. This is why the circuit rewards a relaxed pace and a waterproof jacket in every month.

Uganda

Uganda Through the Year

Uganda is greenest during its rainy seasons, roughly March to May and September to November. The Nile and Mabamba are accessible most of the year, and Jinja is pleasant in dry spells. See best time to visit Uganda for more detail.

Kenya

Kenya Through the Year

In Kenya, dry months suit Kakamega trails and Mara drives, while the long rains make forests lush and roads slow. The Mara gains its famous herds in the dry months from about July to October, and our Mara best-time guide and best time to visit Kenya explain the details.

Tanzania

Tanzania Through the Year

In the Serengeti, herds move through different regions across the year, so the right region depends on the month. Calving is roughly January to March in the south, and river crossings are roughly July to October in the north. Read best time to visit the Serengeti and best time to visit Tanzania. Our Great Migration guide adds the wider picture. Never rely on a guaranteed crossing date.

Choosing

Choosing a Window

For the broadest balance, many travellers choose January and February or the drier months of June to October. November and December appeal to those who like green landscapes and quieter parks. April and May suit flexible travellers who accept rain. Book early for July to October and the Christmas period. For the full regional view see East Africa best time to visit.

Shoulder

Shoulder Months and Flexibility

The edges of the seasons, such as early June, late October and early December, can give pleasant weather with fewer visitors, though rainfall is less predictable. If your dates are fixed, ask your operator to adjust the order of the route so that the stops most affected by rain, such as forest walks or river crossings, fall on the best days. Flexibility on a few days usually matters more than choosing a perfect month.

What

What to Pack for the Season

Layers are useful in every month. Mornings in the Mara and the Serengeti can be cold, afternoons warm, and the lake basin can bring sudden showers. Pack a waterproof jacket, a warm fleece, sun protection and sturdy walking shoes, and keep binoculars and a camera in a dry bag. The East Africa packing list gives a fuller checklist for dry and green seasons.
