Short Lake Victoria Circuit Itinerary: Seven Days in Uganda and Kenya

This seven day itinerary follows the northern shore of Lake Victoria, starting at Entebbe, visiting Mabamba Swamp and Jinja, then crossing into western Kenya for Kakamega Forest.

Seven days cannot cover the whole circuit, so this plan concentrates on the northern lake shore and the neighbouring forest. It is a gentle way to sample Uganda and Kenya without game-drive marathons, and it ends with a short domestic flight rather than a repeat drive.

It is one of three itineraries in the set introduced in the Lake Victoria circuit guide. Tanzania is left for the medium and long versions.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Uganda

Uganda Days: Entebbe, Mabamba and Jinja

Day two is the heart of the Uganda leg. Mabamba Swamp is best at dawn, and a spare hour should be kept for a second attempt at the shoebill. After the road to Jinja, the source of the Nile provides a calmer afternoon. Our Kampala to Jinja route describes the drive in general terms, and Entebbe Botanical Gardens make an easy first-day walk.

Crossing

Crossing Into Kenya

Day four is the longest and includes the border crossing, so start early and carry documents in hand luggage. Your vehicle and driver usually change on the far side, and queues vary. Keep the afternoon free so that a late arrival does not spoil the evening. The route and border guide explains the general process, and the Uganda and Kenya route and border guide covers the crossing from a different angle.

Kenya

Kenya Days: Kisumu and Kakamega

Kisumu gives a lakeside rest before the forest. Kakamega Forest is best walked early, when birds and primates are active, with a local guide who knows the trails. Rain can make paths slippery, so bring waterproofs and sturdy shoes. See where to stay in Kakamega for the types of accommodation available and Nairobi to Kakamega for road context.

Pacing

Pacing and Seasons

The plan has two comfortable days, one long border day and two forest mornings. It works in most months, but the drier months make forest tracks easier. Avoid cramming extra activities into Day three if you are tired from travel. Our best-time page explains seasons around the lake.

Optional

Optional Swaps

Replace Jinja with the Ssese Islands for a quiet island stay, using the Lake Victoria cruises and Ssese Islands page. Add a night in the Masai Mara by flying from Kisumu or Nairobi, or extend to the medium itinerary to reach the Serengeti. Photographers may prefer two nights at Kakamega for better light.

What

What Is Included and Who It Suits

In general terms the plan includes accommodation, a vehicle with a driver guide, boat trips at Mabamba and the Nile, entry arrangements and the listed transfers. Park and activity tariffs set by the authorities apply and are explained at enquiry. It suits couples, small groups and families with older children who enjoy nature, boat trips and gentle walking.
