Lake Victoria Circuit Combination: A Safari Around the Largest Lake in Africa
The Lake Victoria circuit follows the shores of the largest lake in Africa through Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania, linking lakeside towns, the source of the Nile, western Kenyan forest and the great plains of the Mara and Serengeti.
Lake Victoria is shared by the three countries and gives this combination its natural logic. The route starts on the Ugandan shore near Entebbe, runs east past Jinja where the Nile leaves the lake, crosses into western Kenya, reaches the Masai Mara and then continues into the Serengeti before finishing at Mwanza on the Tanzanian shore.
The circuit is a different idea from a conventional safari line. It mixes water, forest, towns and savannah, and it suits travellers who enjoy landscapes and local life as much as game drives. This pillar page introduces the route and links to seven companion pages.
This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Why a Lake Victoria Circuit
Most East Africa combinations run in a straight line. A lake circuit loops around a shared landscape instead, so each country shows a different side of the same body of water. The lake itself shapes weather, fishing communities and wildlife, and our Lake Victoria guide explains its role in more detail. For safari travellers it also solves a practical problem: both ends of the route, Entebbe and Mwanza, have airports, which allows a flight in one direction and avoids backtracking. Read East Africa lakes and rivers for context.
The Uganda Shore
The circuit begins near Entebbe, with birding at Mabamba Swamp and optional island time on the Ssese Islands. East of Kampala, Jinja and the source of the Nile offer river views, boat trips and adventure activities such as rafting at Bujagali Falls. See Kampala to Jinja for the drive. Murchison Falls and western parks can be added, as described in the long itinerary.
The Kenya Shore
From Jinja the route crosses into western Kenya, a green region around the lake. Kakamega Forest is the main nature stop, with rainforest primates and birds that overlap with Uganda. The route then turns south towards the Masai Mara, where open plains and big cats provide the classic safari experience. See Nairobi to Kakamega for a sense of distances and travel style.
The Tanzania Shore
The Mara continues south as the Serengeti, so the circuit crosses into Tanzania through the same ecosystem. The final stage runs to Mwanza on the southern shore, using Mwanza to Serengeti in reverse, and can include time on Rubondo Island, described in where to stay on Rubondo. Mwanza gives a different finish from the usual Arusha exit.
Choosing a Length
A week is enough for a Uganda and Kenya lakeshore taster, as shown in the short itinerary. Eleven or twelve days link all three countries in the medium itinerary, and seventeen days in the long itinerary add Rubondo and more time in each park. Because the route includes long drives, we usually recommend at least ten days.
Practical Planning
Read the route and border guide for borders and flights, the best-time page for seasons, the practical guide for visas and health, and the FAQs for common questions. Our Uganda and Kenya and Kenya and Tanzania pages describe the same borders from a different angle.
Who the Circuit Suits
The circuit suits travellers who like variety: a first visit that includes a source of the Nile, a forest, the Mara and the Serengeti is rare in a single trip. It also suits those who prefer a story with a beginning and an end rather than a repeat of a standard route. It is less suited to anyone who dislikes long drives, because some days involve hours on the road. In general terms each plan includes accommodation, vehicles with driver guides and transfers, while park tariffs set by the authorities apply and are explained when you enquire.
