Medium Lake Victoria Circuit Itinerary: Twelve Days Linking Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania

This twelve day itinerary completes the Lake Victoria loop, moving from Entebbe and Jinja through Kakamega and the Masai Mara into the Serengeti and finishing at Mwanza.

Twelve days gives the circuit enough room to breathe. There is time for a day on the Nile, a forest morning at Kakamega, two nights in the Mara and two in the Serengeti, with a final transfer to Mwanza.

It belongs to the series introduced in the Lake Victoria circuit guide and balances landscape, wildlife and travel time.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Uganda

Uganda Days: Lake and River

The first three days focus on water. Mabamba gives a swamp boat trip in the early morning, and Jinja offers a calm Nile day, with optional adventure activities such as those at Bujagali Falls. Rest on Day three is deliberate, because Day four is long. See Entebbe to Mabamba for the first transfer.

Kenya

Kenya Days: Forest and Plains

After the border, Kakamega offers shaded walking, and the Masai Mara brings open plains and big cats. Day six may be a long road day or a flight, depending on schedules and budget. Two nights in the Mara give time for dawn and dusk drives, with a midday rest. The Mara best time page helps with timing.

Tanzania

Tanzania Days: Serengeti and Mwanza

The Mara continues into the Serengeti. Some itineraries cross by road and others fly, and your operator advises which is reliable for your dates. The last day goes to Mwanza, as described in Mwanza to Serengeti. If you want more time, extend to include Rubondo Island, described in where to stay on Rubondo.

Wildlife

Wildlife and Activity Highlights

The circuit gives a rare combination of experiences in one journey. Water brings boat trips among papyrus and on the Nile, the forest brings primates and birds, and the plains bring lions, elephants, giraffes and large herds. Ask your guide to adjust the daily rhythm: shorter drives and a midday rest suit families, while photographers may prefer long dawn sessions. Each stop has a different light and a different pace, which is part of the appeal.

Pacing

Pacing Advice

The plan has three notably long days: Day four, Day six and Day nine. Avoid scheduling anything strenuous the next morning. Keep luggage soft and light for aircraft and border changes, and keep one day bag with essentials. If you travel in the migration season, ask your operator about the best Serengeti region for your dates, as explained in our Great Migration guide.

Optional

Optional Swaps and Extensions

Replace Kakamega with an extra night in the Mara if forests are not a priority. Add Murchison Falls in Uganda by using the long itinerary. Swap a Serengeti night for the Ngorongoro Crater if routes allow. A shorter version is the short itinerary, and a fuller one is the long itinerary.
