Kenya Birding Itinerary Planner: Routes, Pacing and Sample Trips
A good Kenya birding trip links habitats in a sensible loop, starting around Nairobi and the Rift Valley and then choosing between the savannah, the western forest and the coast.
Kenya's habitats sit close together, but roads and distances can eat time, so the key to a good birding itinerary is deciding how many regions you can enjoy properly. Fewer, longer stays usually beat a rushed route.
This planner gives three sample routes and the reasoning behind them. Your operator can adjust each one to season, interests and fitness.
This guide is part of our animals of Uganda and East Africa guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.
At a glance
- Short trip: 7 days: Rift Valley and Mara
- Medium trip: 10 days: add the highlands and Kakamega
- Long trip: 14 days: add Samburu or the coast
- Pace: Two or three nights per stop
- Guides: A specialist birding guide is advised
Planning Principles
Allow at least two nights at each main stop so you can bird the early morning twice. Build in a flexible morning for rain or a missed target. Combine regions that share roads, and avoid very long transfer days if you want fresh mornings. Use a guide who knows regional specials, and ask for vehicles with enough window space for everyone. See the Kenya birding calendar for season, and our Kenya birding safari itinerary for a ready-made version.
Sample 7-Day Route
Day 1 Nairobi, with a short walk if time allows. Days 2 and 3 at Lake Naivasha, with a boat outing and a walk or cycle at Hell's Gate. Day 4 at Lake Nakuru, with flamingo and pelican viewing. Days 5 and 6 in the Masai Mara for savannah birds and mammals. Day 7 return to Nairobi. This route suits first-timers who want birds and big game together.
Sample 10-Day Route
Begin with two nights at Naivasha and one at Nakuru, then continue to Lake Baringo for two nights, taking in Lake Bogoria on the way. Turn west to Kakamega for two nights, then fly or drive back toward Nairobi for the Mara or a final night near the airport. It is an excellent route for a large variety of habitats, with a few longer road days that need early starts.
Sample 14-Day Route
Add the northern or coastal chapter. One option is to begin with the lakes and highlands, add the Aberdares, then fly to the northern reserves for Somali-Masai species. Another is to finish at the coast with Arabuko-Sokoke and Mida Creek. Both give the widest species range, and both rely on short scheduled flights; check current schedules and luggage rules with your operator. See Kenya domestic flights guide.
Pacing and Transfers
Birders tend to want long mornings in the field, so schedule transfers for midday, and keep rests during the hottest hours. In forests, expect fewer kilometres and more time per site. Rough roads in some regions need a capable vehicle and extra time. Use the route guides to judge distances, including Nairobi to Lake Baringo and Nairobi to Lake Naivasha.
What to Pack and Prepare
Bring binoculars, a field guide or app, a hat, layers for highlands, waterproofs, and a scarf for dust. Photographers may want a long lens and a bean bag. Keep luggage soft for light aircraft. See best binoculars for safari and the East Africa packing list for details.
Fitting Birding Into a General Safari
If you are not an all-day birder, choose a regular safari and add one or two birding stops. A morning at Naivasha before the Mara, or a coastal extension at the end, gives variety without changing the whole trip. Compare packaged options in the 7 days best of Kenya safari holiday and the East Africa birding guide.
