Birding at Lake Naivasha: Papyrus, Kingfishers, Boats and Hell's Gate Cliffs
Lake Naivasha is a freshwater lake with papyrus margins, acacia woodland and nearby cliffs, and it is one of the easiest and most rewarding birding stops within reach of Nairobi.
Because the water is fresh, Naivasha supports fish, hippos and a wide range of waterbirds, and the lake is recognised as a wetland of international importance. Gardens, woodland and farmland around it add to the list.
Within a short drive, Hell's Gate National Park adds cliffs and gorges for raptors, so wetland and dry-country birds can be combined in a single stay.

The Lake and Its Margins
Naivasha's fringe of papyrus and floating vegetation is the key habitat for many birds, with open water beyond. Water levels change over time, so shoreline conditions vary. Lodges and campsites around the lake offer gardens that are excellent for birds, with large acacias holding colonies of weavers and flocks of starlings. See where to stay at Lake Naivasha and the overview in Lake Naivasha and Hell's Gate.
Waterbirds on a Boat Trip
Boat outings, usually morning, take you along the papyrus edge. Look for African fish eagle, great white pelican, long-tailed and great cormorants, African jacana, purple heron, squacco heron, black crake, red-knobbed coot, pied kingfisher, malachite kingfisher and giant kingfisher. African spoonbill, hamerkop and yellow-billed stork may be seen at the shore. Hippos graze along the shore and are dangerous on land at night, so keep to guide instructions.
Woodland and Garden Birds
Yellow-barked acacia woodland around the lake holds birds including African paradise flycatcher, tropical boubou, grey-headed gull, Hartlaub's turaco in some places, red-chested cuckoo, various sunbirds and barbets. At dusk and dawn, white-browed coucal calls from reed edges. Walks on Crescent Island, where permitted, allow close views of birds alongside giraffe and other animals. Check access rules before booking. Photographers enjoy low early light across the water.
Hell's Gate Cliffs and Raptors
Hell's Gate National Park, a short distance from the lake, has red cliffs and gorges that host raptors. Look for Verreaux's eagle, augur buzzard, Rueppell's vulture and, with luck, lammergeier, as well as swifts, swallows and white-necked ravens on the rock faces. Cycling and walking are allowed in much of the park, which makes birding more flexible than in most savannah parks. See the Naivasha and Hell's Gate wildlife guide and the Kenya raptors guide.
Best Months
Naivasha is productive in every month. The northern winter, from about November to April, adds European and Asian migrants, especially waders, terns and warblers. Rains from March to May produce green growth and breeding activity, and drier months make Hell's Gate more comfortable for walking and cycling. Mornings are best for activity, and afternoons often bring wind on the lake. See best time to visit Naivasha and Hell's Gate and the Kenya birding calendar.
How to Bird Naivasha
Book a boat trip with a licensed operator and ask for a guide who knows the birds. Visit Hell's Gate early to avoid heat, and bring water, a hat and sturdy shoes. Respect hippos and other large animals, and keep noise low near nests. Binoculars with good close focus help in reeds, and a field guide or app helps with similar species. See best binoculars for safari.
Getting There and Combining Stops
Naivasha is a short drive from Nairobi and is often the first or last night of a safari. See Nairobi to Lake Naivasha. It combines with Lake Elmenteita and Lake Nakuru to the north and with the Masai Mara to the south-west. See the Kenya birding itinerary planner.
