Kenya 5-Day Safari Itinerary: Lake Nakuru and the Masai Mara

Five days is enough to see the Rift Valley's flamingo shores at Lake Nakuru and spend three nights with the big cats and herds of the Masai Mara, provided you accept two road days and travel light.

This plan suits travellers who want the headline Kenya experience without a long holiday. It sits between the shorter ideas in Kenya safari itineraries of 3, 5 and 7 days and the longer trips such as the 7-day itinerary.

The structure is simple: a morning departure from Nairobi, one night in the Rift Valley, then the Mara for the core of the trip. Below you will find the day-by-day outline, a flying variation, pacing advice and notes on season.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Day

Day 1 and 2: Nairobi to the Rift Valley

Starting early matters, because the journey from Nairobi to the Rift Valley can be slow in traffic. You will cross the escarpment with views over the valley floor before reaching Lake Nakuru, a compact park where rhinos and a lake backed by woodland make for easy, relaxed viewing. Birds are the other draw, and flamingo numbers change with the lake levels.

On day 2 take an early drive, then head south-west. The route to the Mara is covered in Masai Mara to Lake Nakuru, read in reverse. Expect a long drive broken by a lunch stop, and a gentle introduction to the reserve in the afternoon.

Days

Days 3 and 4: The Masai Mara

Two full days is a short but workable stay. Aim for a dawn start on both mornings, when cats are often active, and book a picnic breakfast or a mid-morning stop in the field to avoid unnecessary vehicle movements. Use the second day to follow up on what you saw or to try a different sector. Read the big cats and game drive guide to prepare.

If the budget allows, a balloon flight at dawn is a memorable add-on; see hot air ballooning in the Mara. Otherwise consider a conservancy stay for night drives and walks, as explained in Mara conservancies explained.

Fly

Fly One Way to Save Time

The biggest improvement to a five-day plan is to fly one way between the Mara and Nairobi, so that the last day is not lost to a long drive. Scheduled light aircraft land at airstrips near the camps, and baggage limits are strict; see Kenya luggage and light aircraft rules and the Nairobi to Masai Mara guide. Many travellers drive out via Nakuru and fly back, which combines scenery with efficiency.

Pacing

Pacing and What to Expect

This is an active schedule. You will spend the first two days largely in a vehicle, and the Mara days begin early. Build rest into the middle of the day, and do not over-pack the evenings. Children and older travellers should check road conditions with the operator before agreeing to the longest transfer; see safari with children and senior and accessible safaris.

If you can add a day, spend it in the Mara rather than adding another park; depth beats breadth on a short trip.

Best

Best Season for This Plan

The Mara is at its busiest from July to October when the wildebeest herds are present; book early. January and February are dry and warm with fewer visitors, while March to May is green and quiet but wetter. Lake Nakuru is rewarding all year. See the Mara best-time guide and best time to visit Kenya.
