Karatu to Ngorongoro: Up to the Crater Rim and Down to the Floor

From Karatu the road climbs through forest to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area gate and the crater rim, then a steep descent track leads onto the crater floor.

The journey is short but dramatic. Within a short drive you move from farmland into cloud forest, then arrive at the rim with a view over a vast caldera.

This page covers the route and practicalities. See also the Ngorongoro Crater guide and how to get to Ngorongoro.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

The Road to the Gate

The road from Karatu climbs through coffee farms and then into forest near the conservation gate, where formalities are completed by your driver-guide. Beyond the gate the road continues to the crater rim, with viewpoints over the caldera. Surfaces are a mix of tarmac and graded track, and mist or rain can reduce visibility. Allow time for the gate, since queues can build.

The

The Rim and Descent

The descent road enters the crater at designated points, with steep, narrow sections that only suit a suitable 4x4 and an experienced driver. Vehicles on the crater floor follow set tracks, and rules limit the time on the floor. Check current rules with your operator. See Ngorongoro Crater FAQs.

Timing

Timing the Day

Start early to reach the floor in good light, as animals are active and cloud often builds later. Pack a picnic lunch, since you eat on the floor. See the Ngorongoro Crater wildlife guide.

What

What to Book

Ask about the vehicle type, pop-up roof, entry arrangements, picnic lunch and whether a ranger accompanies you. Confirm onward travel to the Serengeti. See Ngorongoro to the Serengeti.

Weather

Weather and Seasons

The rim is cool and misty at any time of year, and the long rains bring mud on tracks. See the Ngorongoro best-time guide.

What

What to Prepare

Bring a fleece, windproof jacket, hat, binoculars and a camera with spare batteries. See the East Africa packing list.

Morning

Morning at the Gate

Gate procedures are handled by your driver-guide, but arriving early avoids the queue and gives you the best light on the rim. Some visitors stop at a viewpoint on the way down to the crater floor for photographs before the descent, and the temperature drops noticeably on the rim, so keep a jacket handy. Plastic bags are restricted in many Tanzanian protected areas, so leave them at the lodge. Binoculars, a camera with a zoom lens and a charged phone are the most useful items.

After

After the Crater

Most itineraries return to Karatu or continue to the Serengeti after the crater visit. Returning gives you a relaxed evening, while the Serengeti road is long and best started early. See Ngorongoro Conservation Area beyond the crater if you want to add a Maasai community visit, the highlands or a walk on the rim, and plan an extra night rather than squeezing it all into one day.

Wildlife

Wildlife and Scenery on the Way

The forested slopes below the rim are part of a highland ecosystem that holds birds, monkeys and occasionally buffalo or elephants near the road, so keep your eyes open and your windows down where safe. On the rim, mist often fills the caldera in the early morning and clears slowly, and the first view into the crater is one of the memorable moments of a Tanzanian safari. Give yourself time at the viewpoint before descending.
