Dar es Salaam to Arusha: Flying, Driving or Taking the Long Road North

Most visitors fly from Dar es Salaam to Kilimanjaro or Arusha, because the road north is a full day or more, though driving suits travellers who want to see the country.

Tanzania is large, and the commercial capital lies far from the northern safari circuit. A short flight links them, while the road crosses the lowlands, the Pare and Usambara foothills and then the plains near Kilimanjaro.

This page compares the options. See also the Tanzania domestic flights guide and the Dar es Salaam guide.

Overview

Flying North

Scheduled flights link Dar es Salaam with Kilimanjaro International Airport and Arusha. The flight is short and by far the most efficient way to reach the northern circuit. Check current schedules with your operator and see luggage and light aircraft rules if you connect to small planes.

The

The Road North

The route leaves Dar es Salaam on the main highway, passes Chalinze and crosses lowland and hill country towards Korogwe and Same, then continues to Moshi and Arusha. Roadworks, trucks and towns slow progress, so a full day is the minimum and many travellers split the journey. Views of the Pare mountains and, on clear days, Kilimanjaro reward patient travellers.

Buses

Buses and Private Drivers

Long-distance coaches run daily and are the cheapest option, though they are slow and crowded. A private driver offers comfort, flexibility and safe stops. Ask about drivers' experience on highways, the vehicle condition and rest breaks.

Stops

Stops and Overnights

Consider a night in Moshi or Same to break the journey. See Moshi town guide and Kilimanjaro Airport to Moshi.

What to Book

Sample

Sample Plans

Flyers can finish a Dar es Salaam city stay in the morning, fly north after lunch and reach Arusha or Moshi by evening, ready for an early safari start. Drivers can split the road into two days with a night in Moshi, Same or Korogwe, which allows stops at viewpoints and markets. A mixed plan flies north and returns by road to see the countryside. Tell your operator how much time you have, because a long road day eats into the first morning of a safari.

Road

Road Conditions and Safety

The northern highway carries heavy traffic, including long-haul trucks, buses and motorcycles. Avoid driving at night, choose a driver with a good record and ask whether the vehicle has seat belts for all passengers. Weather matters less than traffic, though heavy rain slows progress in the lowlands. Carry water, snacks and a first-aid kit, and keep valuables out of sight at stops.

Arriving

Arriving in the North

In Arusha you can base for Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti, while Moshi suits Kilimanjaro. See the northern circuit safari guide and the Arusha safari gateway guide for next steps.

Cost

Cost and Value Considerations

Without quoting prices, the main trade-off is between money and time. Flights are more expensive but save a day, while coaches and private drivers cost differently and use time. If your safari days are limited, flying usually gives better value overall. Ask your operator to compare options for your dates, including baggage fees and transfers at both ends.

Who

Who Each Option Suits

Flying suits most travellers. The road suits those with time. See the Arusha city guide.
