Moshi Town Guide: Base for Kilimanjaro, Coffee Farms and Waterfalls

Moshi is a relaxed town at the southern foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, used as a base for climbs and as a pleasant place to spend a day or two among coffee farms, waterfalls and Chagga villages.

On clear mornings the snowcapped summit seems to float above the rooftops, which gives Moshi one of the most dramatic backdrops of any Tanzanian town. Climbers, volunteers and safari travellers all pass through.

This guide explains what Moshi offers beyond the mountain and how it connects with Arusha and the parks.

This guide is part of our Uganda districts and towns guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

Moshi and the Mountain

Moshi is the main base for climbers heading to the gates on the southern and eastern slopes. Operators collect trekkers from their hotels for the drive to the park gate, and many travellers use the days before a climb to rest, sort equipment and adjust to the altitude of the town. After the descent, a hot shower and a good meal in Moshi are rewards in themselves. For routes and preparation, see the Kilimanjaro climbing guide, routes compared and the Moshi to Kilimanjaro gates route.

Chagga

Chagga Culture and Coffee

The slopes around Moshi are the homeland of the Chagga people, who developed sophisticated irrigation channels and mixed gardens of bananas, coffee and vegetables on the mountain. Coffee is the best-known crop, and village tours let you walk through the farms, see the beans processed by hand and taste freshly roasted coffee. Visits are often combined with a waterfall walk. Choose tours arranged with local families or cooperatives so that income stays in the community, and ask permission before photographing people. See East Africa culture and people for etiquette.

Day

Day Trips From Town

Moshi works well as a base for short excursions that do not need a long drive:

  • Waterfall and coffee tours on the lower slopes, usually a half-day.
  • Lake Chala, a deep crater lake on the Kenyan border with canoeing and walking options.
  • Marangu village, with traditional gardens and a nearby gate to the mountain.
  • Hot spring areas and swimming holes, which can be arranged through local guides.
  • Short walks with views of the mountain on clear mornings.
Getting

Getting to Moshi

Kilimanjaro International Airport lies between Moshi and Arusha, so many visitors arrive and head straight to town. Roads from Arusha are in generally good condition, and the transfer is described in the Arusha to Moshi route. From Dar es Salaam, most travellers fly, though long-distance buses also run. Allow a relaxed margin when connecting with international flights, and confirm airport transfers in advance. See the getting to Kilimanjaro guide for more detail.

Where

Where to Stay

Moshi has simple guesthouses, mid-range hotels with pools and a few lodges in gardens on the slopes. A hotel with a garden or a view of the mountain is worth seeking, but remember that the summit is often covered by cloud in the afternoon and wet months. Ask whether the hotel stores luggage during a climb, offers a gear-rental referral and can serve early breakfasts. Our Moshi and Kilimanjaro where-to-stay guide explains the options.

Fitting

Fitting Moshi Into a Safari

Many travellers pair a Kilimanjaro climb with a short safari, with Moshi as the link. A four-day safari in Tarangire, Manyara and Ngorongoro can precede or follow the mountain, and the town offers a restful buffer. Because safari parks lie west of Arusha, the road from Moshi adds a morning of travel. See the safari and Kilimanjaro itinerary for pacing, and the Arusha gateway guide for the neighbouring hub.

Seasons

Seasons and Practical Tips

The best views and the driest climbing conditions come in the two dry spells, roughly January to February and June to October, while the long rains of about March to May bring cloud and mud. Evenings can be cool at Moshi's altitude, so pack a light jacket. Check Kilimanjaro best time to visit before booking. Drink only bottled or treated water, use sun protection and carry small notes for markets and tips.
