Rwenzori and Queen Elizabeth Short Itinerary: Six Days of Peaks and Wildlife

Six days is enough for two nights in Queen Elizabeth, two nights near the Rwenzori Mountains and a pair of long but rewarding drives.

A short version of this combination keeps the walking gentle. You do not have time for a multi-day trek, but a day hike on the lower slopes gives a real feel for the mountains and their mossy forest, and you still get the safari highlights.

The plan below accepts that two days will be heavily travel-focused. Read the combination guide if you are weighing this against a longer trip.

Why

Why Start With the Savannah

On a short trip, taking the savannah first lets you ease into the journey with game drives and a boat cruise, then finish with the physical day on the mountain. It also positions you for a view of the peaks at the end of the safari, when the weather may offer a clear morning. If the hike came first, you would risk tired legs on game drives. Details of the road are in Kampala to Queen Elizabeth route.

Day

Day Two and Three: Queen Elizabeth

Arriving in the afternoon gives time for a first game drive and a first look at elephants, buffalo and antelope. The following day includes the famous Kazinga Channel boat trip, when hippos, buffalo, elephants and many waterbirds line the banks. Your guide will balance drive times to suit light and temperature.

Day

Day Four: Crater Lakes and Kasese

The transfer to Kasese passes through landscapes of crater lakes and farmland, and a stop at the Katwe explosion craters makes a pleasant break. Kasese is the gateway town for the mountains, described in the Kasese town guide.

Day

Day Five: The Mountain Walk

A day hike in the Rwenzori lower forest introduces you to moss-draped trees, streams and possibly birds and primates. It is not a summit attempt. You should wear proper walking shoes and carry rain gear. See Rwenzori Mountains National Park for what to expect and ask your operator which trail suits your fitness.

Swaps

Swaps and Extras

If you want chimpanzees, ask about tracking at Kyambura Gorge, which can replace the second game drive. If you do not want to hike, spend day five at cultural visits and a relaxed viewpoint lunch. For more time, see the medium itinerary.

Who

Who This Short Trip Suits

This plan suits travellers who want both a wildlife and a mountain experience but have only a long weekend plus travel days. It works for couples, small groups and families with teenagers. It is less suitable for people who dislike long drives, because two of the six days are largely spent on the road. If that worries you, ask about a domestic flight or reduce the trip to a single base. You will also see more if you accept that the mountain may be hidden by cloud and treat it as a bonus when it clears. See Uganda safari itinerary ideas for other short options.

Practical

Practical Pacing Notes

Roads are the main challenge, so start early and carry snacks and water. Mountain weather changes quickly, so keep layers handy. Check the best time page before choosing dates and the practical guide for gear. Return to the pillar guide for the whole picture.
