Best Time for Rwenzori and Queen Elizabeth: Seasons Explained

The drier months, roughly December to February and June to August, are generally the best window for the combination, because mountain trails are less muddy and game drives are easier.

The Rwenzori Mountains make their own weather and can be wet at any time of year, while Queen Elizabeth National Park on the plains below follows the broader Ugandan pattern of two rainy and two drier seasons. A good plan accepts these differences.

The advice below is general, since rainfall varies each year, and flexibility is always wise on the mountain.

Rwenzori

Rwenzori Trail Conditions

The mountains are famous for mud, mist and rain, even in the drier months. Drier periods make the trails firmer and views of the peaks more likely, but waterproof gear is essential regardless. Heavy rain can slow progress and may affect access, so keep a spare day. See Rwenzori in the dry season and Rwenzori in the rainy season.

Queen

Queen Elizabeth Through the Year

Game drives are possible year-round. In drier months grass is shorter and animals concentrate near water, making viewing easier. In wetter months the park is green, birdlife is lively and the park is quieter, although some tracks are slower. See dry season guide and rainy season guide. The Kazinga Channel boat trip works at any time.

Chimpanzees

Chimpanzees and Forest Walks

Kyambura Gorge tracking is available year-round, but forest paths can be slippery in wet months, and sightings depend on the chimpanzees. Allow flexibility. See Kyambura Gorge for what the experience involves.

Choosing

Choosing Between Trek and Safari Priorities

If the mountain is your priority, aim for the drier months. If you want a quiet safari with lush landscapes, the shoulder months can suit you and often cost less to organise. If you want both and your dates are fixed, build rest days into the plan and accept some weather risk.

Shoulder

Shoulder Months and Flexibility

The shoulder months at the start and end of each rainy season can be an excellent compromise. Showers tend to be shorter and more predictable, the landscape is fresh and green, and lodges are less crowded, so you may get a quieter boat on the Kazinga Channel and a more relaxed pace in the park. On the mountain, expect cloud and damp but also dramatic light when it breaks. The key is flexibility: keep a spare day around any trek, avoid booking tight flight connections straight afterwards and accept that weather will have the final say. See Kasese town guide for the gateway where plans are often adjusted.

Photography

Photography and Visibility

Light and cloud shape the photographic side of this trip. Early mornings in the drier months give the best chance of clear views of the peaks from the Kasese side, and the savannah is at its most photogenic in the soft light before and after midday. In wetter months, dramatic skies, green foregrounds and active birdlife offer different rewards. Pack a lens cloth and protect equipment from damp on the mountain.
