Rwenzori and Queen Elizabeth Practical Guide: Visas, Health, Gear and Permits
This guide covers the practical side of a Rwenzori and Queen Elizabeth trip: entry documents, health, fitness, trekking and safari clothing, permits and insurance.
The two halves of this trip need different kit. Safari days call for neutral colours and sun protection, while mountain days call for waterproofs, warm layers and proper boots. Packing sensibly saves discomfort.
Always rely on official sources for visa, health and permit rules, since these change. The notes below tell you what to organise and where to check.
This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.
At a glance
- Visa: Check official Uganda guidance before travel
- Health: See a travel clinic about vaccines and malaria
- Fitness: Training advised for mountain days
- Gear: Waterproofs, boots, layers
- Insurance: Include trekking and evacuation
Entry Documents
Most visitors need a Ugandan visa, applied for online in advance, and your passport should have sufficient validity. Requirements differ by nationality, so use the official portal and see Uganda e-visa and entry requirements. For multi-country trips, see the East Africa visa guide.
Health and Altitude
Consult a travel health professional about routine vaccines, any entry documentation and malaria prevention. Western Uganda is a malaria-risk area. Mountain trekking involves altitude, so tell your operator if you have heart, lung or blood-pressure conditions, and descend if you feel unwell. See Uganda health and malaria guide and East Africa health and vaccinations.
Fitness and Preparation
Build up with regular long walks, stairs and hill days, ideally in the boots you will wear. Practice walking in rain gear to test comfort. You do not need technical climbing skills for guided trails, but stamina and willingness to deal with mud are essential. If you plan only day walks, moderate fitness is enough.
What to Pack
- Broken-in waterproof walking boots and spare socks
- Waterproof jacket and trousers, since mountain rain is common
- Warm layers and a hat for cold mornings and high camps
- Neutral safari clothing for game drives
- Trekking poles if you use them, and a headlamp
- Binoculars, sun protection and insect repellent
- Dry bags for camera and electronics
See also Uganda safari packing list. Use soft bags for light aircraft and porters.
Permits, Guides and Park Rules
Rwenzori treks require a registered operator, park guides and the correct permits, and chimpanzee tracking at Kyambura needs a permit arranged in advance. Official tariffs apply and your package will state what is included. See Uganda Wildlife Authority tariff for the official reference. Follow guide instructions on trails and around wildlife.
Money, Tipping and Connectivity
Carry cash for small purchases and tips, with a card for larger payments where accepted. Tip guides, porters and drivers according to local norms, which your operator can explain. Mobile coverage is patchy in the mountains. See Uganda money, tipping and payments.
Choosing an Operator and Guides
Select a licensed operator who can explain their mountain safety procedures, guide-to-guest ratios and how they treat porters. Ask what happens if weather forces a change, how medical emergencies are handled and what equipment is supplied or must be brought. Good operators will answer clearly and will not push an unsuitable route. Tell them honestly about your fitness and any medical conditions. See Uganda safari vehicles and guides and inclusions and exclusions for what to compare between offers.
Insurance and Next Steps
Insure the trip with cover for trekking at altitude, medical care and evacuation. See travel insurance guide. Then read the route guide for transfers and the FAQ page for more answers. The pillar guide provides the overview.
