Rwenzori and Queen Elizabeth Route Guide: Roads, Flights and Transfers
Both parks lie in western Uganda, so the combination needs no border crossing, but the road from Kampala is long and the choice of route affects the whole itinerary.
Most travellers use a private vehicle with a driver guide, which lets you break the journey with stops for lunch, scenery and local markets. Western Uganda is green and varied, and the drive itself is part of the experience.
This guide explains the main route options, how to link the parks and what to bear in mind about roads and timing. It supports the pillar guide.
This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

No Border Crossing, Just Distance
Because Queen Elizabeth and the Rwenzori Mountains are both in Uganda, you do not cross a land border. The challenge is distance: Kampala to the west is a long day on the road. Carry your passport and any permits provided by your operator, since checkpoints are routine. See Uganda e-visa and entry requirements for entry rules, and note that Congo lies close to the Rwenzori area, so follow the itinerary and advice supplied by your operator.
The Southern Road
The common route runs west from Kampala through Masaka and Mbarara to the Queen Elizabeth area, then onward to Kasese. It passes the Equator, a classic photo stop. It is generally the quicker option for reaching the park. See Kampala to Queen Elizabeth route for details, and Kasese to Bwindi via Ishasha for the onward leg.
The Northern Road via Fort Portal
Another option runs through Fort Portal, with its tea country, crater lakes and the Kibale region, then south to Kasese or Queen Elizabeth. It is scenic and lets you add chimpanzees at Kibale. See Kampala to Fort Portal route and Fort Portal to Queen Elizabeth route. It can form a loop with the southern road to avoid retracing your steps.
Kasese and the Mountain Trailheads
Kasese is the usual base for the Rwenzori, with roads leading to the trailheads at the foot of the mountains. Plan to arrive the day before a trek to sort gear and hear the briefing. See Kasese to Rwenzori trailheads. Mountain roads are slower than they look on a map.
Flights and Mixed Options
Domestic flights serve some western parks, and combining a flight with a drive can reduce long road days. Check current schedules with your operator, as services and airstrips vary. Luggage limits on light aircraft are strict, so pack in soft bags. See Uganda airports and international flights for airport context.
Road Conditions and Safety
Main roads are surfaced, but trucks, motorbikes and pedestrians make progress slow, and heavy rain can affect side roads. Avoid driving at night. Safari vehicles are chosen for comfort and clearance. See Uganda road routes and driving guide for a wider look.
Transfers, Timing and Guides
A good driver guide is the heart of a western Uganda road trip. They know when to leave, where to stop and how to read the road. Ask your operator for realistic timings rather than best-case ones, and avoid fitting a mountain briefing or game drive into the same afternoon as a long transfer. Carry water, a light snack and a charged phone, and keep valuables out of sight. Because mountain weather can affect trailhead roads, remain flexible about arrival times. See Uganda safari vehicles and guides for what good transport looks like.
How Route Shapes the Plan
To avoid exhaustion, itineraries should not stack long drives. See the short, medium and long plans for sensible pacing, and the FAQ page for extra answers.
