Rwenzori and Queen Elizabeth Medium Itinerary: Ten Days With Ishasha and Kyambura

Ten days allows a more generous plan: three nights in Queen Elizabeth, a night in Ishasha, and a longer stay near the Rwenzori Mountains with a multi-day walk.

At this length you can treat the mountains seriously without rushing the safari. A two- or three-day walk takes you beyond the lower forest, and the savannah parts of the trip become recovery and reward rather than a quick tick.

The model below can be adjusted: some travellers cut the Ishasha night, others add rest days. Ask your operator to adjust it to your fitness and interests.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Queen Elizabeth in Depth

Three nights in the park allows you to enjoy mornings and evenings without rushing. In addition to the standard game drive and boat trip, you can visit Maramagambo Forest and the bat cave and the Katwe craters, or take a longer drive in the Kasenyi plains. See Queen Elizabeth in the dry season for conditions.

Kyambura

Kyambura and Ishasha

Tracking chimpanzees at Kyambura Gorge demands a short descent into forest and quiet attention, and sightings depend on the animals. Ishasha is a quieter sector, famous for lions that rest in fig trees, as described in tree-climbing lions in Uganda. The lions do not climb every day, so patience helps.

The

The Rwenzori Days

Two days on the mountain allow you to go beyond the lower forest on a guided route, with porters and a guide required by the park. Weather and trail conditions vary, so build in flexibility. Those who want more can extend into the central circuit trek, which requires more days than this plan offers. See where to stay near the Rwenzori for base options.

Alternatives

Alternatives for Non-Hikers

Non-trekkers can replace the mountain days with valley walks, cultural visits, crater lake drives and a visit to a viewpoint. You could also add a boat trip at Toro-Semliki Wildlife Reserve for birds. Anyone with knee or breathing problems should discuss the options with a doctor first.

Cultural

Cultural and Scenic Extras

The area around Kasese and the mountains has more to offer than hiking. Short visits to local farms, craft makers and viewpoints add context to the scenery, and the crater lakes make an easy and photogenic outing. Fort Portal is within reach for those who want tea country and a touch of town life, and it is described in the Fort Portal guide. Keep these extras optional, because mountain days can be tiring. Ask your guide to suggest the best time of day for photographs, since morning light on the peaks is often the clearest.

Pacing

Pacing and Next Steps

Spread the heavy road days and do not schedule a mountain walk straight after a long drive. If you want more time, review the long itinerary. Check route guide for transfers and the pillar guide for the overview.
